Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul, MN, President of the NLC, boxes food with Kirsten Franklin-Temple, CNCS Washington State Director.

Dear Colleagues,

Last year, the national service family pulled off an amazing feat.

In a just a few months, we took an idea and made a movement – recruiting 832 mayors representing nearly 100 million Americans to participate in first annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

We want to make this year’s Mayors Day an even bigger success.  And we’re off to a great start.

Earlier this month, I was thrilled to join the presidents of both national mayor's organizations in announcing the second annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, which will take place on April 1, 2014.

On hand to make the announcement were Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul, Minn., President of the National League of Cities; Mayor Scott Smith of Mesa, Ariz., President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors; and Mayor Mike McGinn of Seattle.  They joined AmeriCorps members, VISTAs, and RSVP volunteers at a Seattle food bank to sort food before making the announcement.

It was terrific to have these bipartisan mayors join us. It’s a sign of how much mayors appreciate the value of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps in their cities.

Over the coming weeks, we will be gearing up the outreach and recruitment effort. Like last year, the CNCS state offices will take the lead on mayor outreach, working closely with State Commissions and grantees.  Please connect with the CNCS State Director in your state - you can find a list here.

Please take a minute to visit our Mayors Day web page for resources and a sign-up page that mayors can use to join this year's effort.

With the momentum we built up last year, I’m confident we can sign on even more mayors this year.  Thank you for your leadership, and help us make the second annual Mayors Day an even bigger success.

Warmest regards,

Wendy signature
