The First Step to Help Avoid Wildland Fire Disaster is Acting Wisely

The U.S. Forest Service partners with the National Fire Protection Association on Firewise Communities, a program that teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. 


Alaska Flooding

An ice jam on the Yukon River in Alaska sparked flooding in the city of Galena, where some 300 people have been evacuated. Flooding occurred between May 17 to June 11, 2013. CNCS will be deploying 14 Washington Conservation Corps members and crew leaders along with 1 CNCS Disaster Response Cadre.

Oklahoma Tornadoes

Since May 22, CNCS has had a total of 40 AmeriCorps members working under a FEMA Mission Assignment supporting Volunteer and Donations Management in the five counties affected by the May tornadoes. They have helped establish Volunteer Reception Centers, coordinate volunteers, establish and manage work order systems, and build capacity for long term recovery. The two teams currently serving in Oklahoma will complete the assignment this week and transitioning the long term recovery efforts to the local community.

Highlights:

  • Served over 12,100 hours
  • Collected/distributed over 19 tons of food
  • Collected/distributed over 237.7 tons of supplies
  • Completed over 650 damage assessments
  • Leveraged over 3,000 volunteers serving over 29,700 hours

There were an additional 86 FEMA Corps members working with Disaster Survivor Assistance and Logistics. 

Other AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs deployed additional members and volunteers to assist in multiple recovery activities. National Service will remain engaged in Oklahoma as long term recovery efforts continue.

This month’s call will provide the opportunity to discuss innovations that emergency management should know about, including the constructive integration of existing, new, and forward thinking innovations that improve a product or service in unexpected ways. The goal is to take innovations that are not necessarily associated with emergency management and relate them to emergency management in order to improve the way we do response, recovery, preparedness, and mitigation.

Disaster Distress Helpline: 1-800-985-5990

The Disaster Distress Helpline provides 24/7, year-round crisis counseling and support.  The Helpline is staffed by trained counselors from a network of crisis call centers located across the United States, all of whom provide:

  • Crisis counseling for those who are in emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused disaster
  • Information on how to recognize distress and its effects on individuals and families
  • Tips for healthy coping
  • Disaster-specific resources and referral information.   

The Disaster Services Unit (DSU) of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has agency-wide responsibility for coordination of CNCS disaster services activities. The DSU provides expertise, ongoing support, and access to a network of dedicated volunteers. CNCS subscribes to the belief that all disasters are local. Our focus is on enhancing and adding value to what already exists in communities and infrastructure -- working in partnership with State Service Commissions, local government, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations.
