ABOUT THE AGENCY

Established in 1993, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is the Federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service through its core programs -- Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund -- and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.    CNCS harnesses America's most powerful resource - the energy and talents of our citizens - to solve problems.  We believe that everyone can make a difference and that all of us should try. From grade school through retirement, CNCS empowers Americans and fosters a lifetime of service.  For more information, visit nationalservice.gov.

ABOUT THE POSITION

In order for all of our students to succeed, the education system must provide the academic support and encouragement at-risk children need to thrive.  At the Corporation for National and Community Service, we believe that all students can succeed when given the chance and we have a simple strategy: Create the conditions that make children and youth want to learn, and give them the opportunity to achieve.  Here’s your chance to make that strategy come to life through national service!

To deliver our mission of service, CNCS is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Senior Advisor for Education Initiatives on a one year temporary appointment, which may be extended for an additional year.  This position reports to the Chief of Program Operations and also has a reporting relationship directly to the Chief Executive Officer.  As a key member of the leadership team, the incumbent works in a close and collaborative manner with other CNCS managers, in particular the Deputy Chief of Staff, who leads the agency’s efforts related to federal and private-sector partnerships (several that impact education).

You will set the strategic direction that coordinates and aligns all CNCS resources (national service programs, Social Innovation Fund, research/evaluation, partnerships, days of service) to advance national educational strategies and policies that impact all phases of the educational timeline – from early childhood education to high school graduation, and college access and success.  Read more about our strategic education focus area at  nationalservice.gov/focus-areas/education.  This involves:

  • Working with, and across, CNCS programs (AmeriCorps , Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, etc.) to develop, align, and coordinate specific plans, deliverables, and measurable outcomes;
  • Seeking opportunities to implement new and  innovative practices to strengthen and improve academic engagement and educational outcomes across communities;
  • Developing initiatives that span the full spectrum of opportunities across the educational timeline, such as those related to early childhood education, college access and success, and STEM learning;
  • Identifying opportunities to increase program effectiveness by leveraging external relationships with federal, state, educational, local, and private entities; and
  • Preparing position papers and reports on the status of activities, making recommendations, and briefing the executive team and program officials, as needed.

To be successful in this position, you must have a passion for national service and a successful and significant track record in leading, establishing and implementing comprehensive educational initiatives, policies, and programs at the national, state and/or local levels.  In addition, you must possess the ability to build and sustain relationships and develop outreach strategies with key partners internally and with other federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, in order to increase the effectiveness of educational programming in communities across the nation.  Desired candidates will have an advanced degree in an education or related field.
