Nearly 200 National Service Members Help Texas and Oklahoma Recover From Floods

AmeriCorps members respond to flooding in TX.

Texas

Following record breaking flooding last month in Texas, now more than 176 total national service members are engaged in the response.

  • 28 Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC) AmeriCorps members deployed to San Marcos, TX to support two Volunteer Reception Centers.
  • 12 South Central Texas Senior Corps RSVP volunteers serving with Salvation Army food service operations.
  • 12 Austin - Travis County Senior Corps RSVP volunteers are supported Texas Search and Rescue teams
  • 1 Washington Conservation Corps member deployed to assist TXCC.
  • 6 AmeriCorps members with St. Bernard Project have deployed to support Texas Emergency Management Division (TEMD) with Volunteer Reception Centers and Multi Agency Response Centers (MARCs) in San Marcos, TX.
  • 10 AmeriCorps NCCC members have deployed to support Texas Emergency Management Division (TEMD) with donations management in San Marcos.
  • 69 AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps members have deployed to support FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance operations and Individual Assistance and Recovery operations.
  • 21 AmeriCorps members have been recruited to support VRC and donations operations in Wimberley and San Marcos.
  • 17 American Red Cross NRC AmeriCorps members have deployed to Texas to communities impacted by flooding to assist with client casework, feeding, damage assessment, and mass care. 

VRC managed by AmeriCorps report:

  • TXCC is in San Marcos and Wimberley running VRC operations in each town.
  • They are partnering with NVOADs on the ground to help train and lead volunteers.
  • Between the two sites they have overseen more than 6,000 volunteers to date and expect several thousand volunteers each day through the weekend.

Oklahoma

Following severe weather and flooding throughout Oklahoma last month national service members are supporting recovery efforts throughout the state. 

  • Senior Corps RSVP volunteers supported recovery efforts in the city of Lawton, OK. Volunteers assisted with cleaning and debris removal efforts. Additional volunteers assisted with the First Baptist Church West's flood recovery feeding operations.   
  • 15 AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps members are supporting recovery efforts in Oklahoma.
  • 6 AmeriCorps NCCC members supported the Red Cross with damage assessments. 
  • 10 American Red Cross NPRC AmeriCorps members have deployed to Oklahoma to communities impacted by flooding to assist with client casework, feeding, damage assessment, and mass care.

Virginia

In response to a variety of severe late winter/early spring snow storms, floods and mudslides in southwestern Virginia, an AmeriCorps NCCC team will be serving with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to provide support to local long-term recovery groups. They will establish a disaster case management system, monitor and document outreach efforts, and support best practices.

South Dakota

Lutheran Social Services (LSS), a subgrantee of Serve South Dakota, had AmeriCorps members assisting in disaster relief after an F2 tornado went through the small town of Delmont, South Dakota last month. They assisted with debris cleanup and coordinated volunteers and volunteer groups that were coming to the aid in the relief effort. In the time, AmeriCorps members assisted over 120 volunteers.
