Waltham Forest Council is committed to improving our parks and green space across the borough. One recent scheme saw each ward receive £25,000 to spend on improvements to their local parks.

The improvements at Cheney Row Park are a £1 million investment to provide new facilities for local residents to enjoy.

Award winning specialist contractors Blakedown Landscapes is delivering the scheme and to date all is on schedule for completion by late Spring 2019.

Their work includes:

  • A nature-themed play-area for children
  • A special area for teenagers to use
  • A raised viewing platform offering views over Banbury Reservoir and the Lea Valley, close to Walthamstow Wetlands
  • Improvements to the existing BMX track
  • An outdoor performance area for events with tiered seats built into the mound surrounding the stage
  • An area where food trucks, coffee carts and ice cream vans can park during events
  • Improved entrances and new signs
  • Enhanced natural areas for plants and wildlife.
  • Open spaces for informal use

The Council’s highways team will be making improvements to the entrances and also to the footpath in Cheney Row once the work on site is completed.

20 new bikes bought for BMX bikers on improved track

From early in 2019 COG will be running BMX training for local young people between 10 and 16 as a trial of some of the new facilities at Cheney Row Park.

Some work is due in January to improve the existing track and it will then be all systems go to get maximum benefit from the new track.

As part of the £1 million investment in improving the park the Council has paid for 20 new BMX bikes, along with appropriate safety equipment, which have been bought by COG.

The hope is that there will be enough young people keen to develop and improve their BMX skills so that, for the first time, Waltham Forest will be able to enter a BMX team in the 2019 London Youth Games.

Friends Group launched and is looking for you!

Friends of Cheney Row Park meeting details

The Friends of Cheney Row Park has now been officially launched and will be working with the Council throughout the next year to make sure that as many local residents as possible use the park and help plan what happens there.

The group is keen to welcome new members who can help in any way, from running an event, to keeping an eye on the new play equipment and newly planted trees when they take a walk, to baking a cake to sell to help raise funds for the group.

The official opening is scheduled for May 2019 and if you have any ideas for the launch event, or can lend a hand on the day, please get in touch.

More details of the group are available from Abi Woodman or Kirk Macdonald
