Record-breaking year for Welsh Tourism in 2014

The number of overnight trips to Wales by GB visitors hits 10 million.

Figures published by the Welsh Government on 12 May confirm that 2014 was a record-breaking year for tourism in Wales as the number of overnight visits to Wales by GB residents hits an impressive 10 million for the first time since the Great Britain Tourism Survey was set up in its present form in 2006. Marketing Award for Visit Wales

Well done to the Visit Wales marketing team on achieving second place – with a commendation – in the Best Integrated Strategy/Campaign at The Drum Search Awards held on 9 June.  We competed against and beat some major brands such as Toys R Us and Moneysupermarket.com in the largest and most competitive category in the awards.

GreenWood Forest Park announce new development to celebrate 22nd Birthday

A new signature attraction at GreenWood Forest Park has received funding support from the Welsh Government under the Tourism Investment Support Scheme (TISS) which will see a new exciting attraction to the park open by May 2016.

Food Tourism Action Plan 2015-2020

In April 2015 the Deputy Minister for Food and Farming, Rebecca Evans and the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates launched the Food Tourism Action Plan for Wales at the Wales Millennium Centre.  

Following consultation with the food tourism sector, Visit Wales and the Food Division of the Department for Natural Resources, have jointly developed the plan, in order to increase Wales’ reputation as a high quality food destination.  

The Plan aims to: 

  • Improve visitor access to and awareness of Welsh Food and Drink;
  • Encourage Welsh hospitality businesses to source more local food and drink;
  • Increase the prevalence of Welsh Food and Drink on menus and retail offering;
  • Identify skills gaps in knowledge, sourcing and preparation of local food and drink


The Welsh Government will continue working with the food and tourism sectors to achieve the actions in the plan. Download your copy of the Food Tourism Action Plan.

Cruise Wales Youth Recruitment Programme

Cruise Wales are looking to recruit people aged 20+ pan Wales who wish to work in the hospitality industry with a 5 star cruise line. There are entry level hospitality positions available, such as stewards/stewardesses, waiter/waitresses, bar waiter, barista, chef de partie and sous chefs. You must have a minimum level 3 qualification and have some previous experience in a 4 or 5 star establishment.  If this is for you, come along to the Cruise Wales Recruitment Open Day taking place in The Friars training restaurant at Coleg Menai, Bangor between 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Wednesday 1 July 2015. 

Viking Recruitment will give a presentation and answer questions about any aspect of  working on board a cruise ship.  Please bring a CV in order to go forward for interview if chosen.  There’s no need to register, just turn up on the day.

The Welsh Government’s ‘Support Your High Street’ campaign is back this year - raising the profile of Wales’ diverse and vibrant local high streets - with an exciting new feature, the High Street Heroes Awards.

National Culinary Squad Selection

The Culinary Association of Wales held two recruitment days in June looking for senior and junior chefs to join the National Culinary Squad.  This team of chefs will represent Wales at the Culinary Olympics in Germany in October 2016 and at the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg in November 2018.  We’ll keep you up-to-date on this news in the coming months.

Special Places 2015

The National Trust is again running their Special Places competition and, in a change from last year, the 2015 competition has five specific voting categories – with a celebrity ambassador championing each category.

Voting for the first phase of the competition can be done online through the National Trust website, Wales Online, Facebook or by using the hashtag #specialplaces on Twitter and Instagram until 14 July. Voting cards can also be completed at National Trust sites and selected sites of partner organisations.

Shortlists will be revealed on 20 July with online voting reopened until midnight 4 August (or until 31 July for voting cards)  The Special Places 2015 winner will be announced on 7 August.

Delivered by Chwarae Teg, the Agile Nation 2 project is ideally suited to women looking to progress into team leader and first managerial positions. This comprehensive support programme helps women develop the skills and confidence needed to successfully progress in the workplace. It also provides the opportunity to build an action plan to support career development along with individual advice, support and guidance from a dedicated and experienced team. The project also provides training to gain an accredited Institute of Leadership and Management qualification.

Funded by the European Social Fund and Welsh Government, Agile Nation 2 work with employed women in the nine industry priority sectors in Wales and is fully funded for participants.
