Better broadband is coming to housing estates

There are some areas in Southwark that suffer from very poor internet speeds. With connectivity demands set to increase over the coming decade, the council is dedicated to improving internet speeds and is working with internet providers to address this. Recently, an agreement was made with Community Fibre and Hyperoptic to install full-fibre connection to all of Southwark’s housing estates. This enables residents to access up to 1Gbps, which is ten times faster than other existing internet providers who offer up to 100Mbps. Find out more about better broadband connectivity for Southwark residents.

Private rented sector: complete our consultation

The council is consulting on proposals to introduce a Gold Standard for the private rented sector. The aim is to improve standards across the sector beyond the current legal requirements for rented properties. Have your say and find out more here.

private fostering

Are you looking after someone else's child?

Some parents arrange for their children to live with another family – this may be just for a few days, or a longer period of time. If your child is living with someone other than a parent or close relative for a period of 28 days or more, the law requires you to tell us about it. It is called private fostering. Our role is not to disrupt the arrangement, but we have a responsibility to ensure that children are being properly cared for. We can also make sure that you get the help you need. Find out more about private fostering.

Become a recycling champion

Southwark’s waste and recycling partner Veolia has been hard at work talking to residents on estates about recycling and what we can do to recycle even more.

Would you like to become a Recycling Champion and encourage others on your estate to continue to recycle more and waste less? We're looking for volunteers to help. You don’t need any experience to be a Recycling Champion, you just need to be over 18 and willing to encourage others to recycle. You can put in as much or as little time as you like. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, learn new skills, do something positive in your local area to help the environment and learn more about recycling and waste reduction. Sign up today to become a Recycling Champion.

Back the Bakerloo

We are a step closer to bringing the Bakerloo to Southwark

We now have nearly 16,000 people backing the Bakerloo campaign. By pledging your support you join thousands of other Londoners who want the Bakerloo line to be extended in south-east London. Show your support now and find out more about the benefits of the extension.

Save time with postal voting

We all lead very busy lives, so plan ahead and register to vote by post. Everyone can vote securely by post which means you do not need to visit a polling station. Provide your details to receive a postal vote for all future elections.
