Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire: August 2014 update

It’s almost a year since the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme was launched, aiming to provide fibre-based broadband to more than 50,000 homes and businesses across the county as part of the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme.

For the first six months there wasn’t a lot for people to see on the ground as our planning and surveying teams worked out exactly where the new fibre optic cable, underground ducts and street cabinets needed to go.

With the planning work for the first phase of the programme now behind us, the building work has begun in earnest with new fibre cabinets going up in towns and villages across the county.

New cabinets explained

A lot of planning and survey work has gone into deciding where these new fibre cabinets end up. It’s a difficult task because most new cabinets must be within 50 metres of existing copper cabinets, be close to a suitable power supply and comply with all necessary safety and street work regulations.

The new fibre cabinets bring superfast capability from the exchange into your street. Copper will still be the final link from the new cabinet to your home or business - this is known as Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) - and the new and existing copper cabinets are linked up underground.

You can find out more about how the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire network is built, including how we tackle other challenges related to how different people are connected to the network, on our website.

Latest 'live' cabinets

Since the last update, another eight cabinets have gone live. There are now 13 live in total, covering over 1,600 premises. You’ll see stickers appearing on newly live cabinets, like the one in Mansfield in the photo on the right, indicating that fibre broadband is available in the area. To check if your property can access it, use the postcode checker on the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire pages of our website.

Next locations to be announced

While our engineers have been busy building, our planners and surveyors have been working out where we go next in more detail, and exchange areas for the next stage of the rollout will be announced in October.

You can view maps of the planned rollout and use our postcode checker to see if you're included in the programme, as well as view a list of all cabinets which have gone live so far on the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire pages of our website.

We also post updates and photos, as well as encouraging you to post your own photos of new cabinets across the county, on the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire Facebook page.

What’s happening outside the programme

You can find out about the exchange upgrades that are happening as part of the BT Openreach commercial broadband rollout on their website. Please note we do not have any influence over these as they are dictated by the market.
