Dementia Awareness Week: 17 – 23 May

Dementia Awareness Week 2015 will take place from 17-23 May. Over a third of people over 65 will develop dementia and an estimated 21m people in England have a close friend or family member with the condition, so it is something that is very likely to affect us all. The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes.  Get more information at:  http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/remembertheperson

It’s also worth taking a look at what’s available from your local library: http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/learning/libraries/librarymembership/reading-about-dementia

Dementia Friends training

Public Health England and the Alzheimer’s Society have launched a Dementia Friends training campaign to raise awareness about dementia.

The training is quick - you just need to watch a short online video - and provides you with a greater understanding about dementia, including tips to help people with the illness.

Hows your heart

How’s your heart today?

If you’re aged between 40 and 74 without an existing condition, you’re entitled to a free NHS Heart Check-Up which can assess your risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and diabetes.

You can’t always tell from looking at someone, but we could all be at risk.  The Heart Check-up takes around 20 minutes and can help spot health risks before they develop  – giving you the chance to make changes to the way you live so that you can avoid them.

Your GP may be able to help refer you to one of the many services in Nottinghamshire which can support you in achieving your health goals.  Contact your GP or pharmacist about a Heart Check-Up.

May is Action on Stroke Month

The Stroke association works to prevent strokes and ensure people make their best recovery.  They fund more research to be there for people to enable them to live well with stroke. Make May Purple for Action on Stroke Month. For more information go to http://www.stroke.org.uk/strokemonth

Mental Health Awareness Week 11 – 17 May

Every year, between 11-17 May, the Mental Health Foundation helps to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues.

The foundation has helped generate public debates around how anxiety, sleep deprivation and exercise can impact our mental health. This year the theme is Mindfulness.

If you want to know more about Mindfulness and how you can get involved with Mental Health Awareness Week go to

Sexual Health services: next steps

The joint Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council consultation to give local residents their say in how sexual health services in the city and county are run ended on 2 April. Your feedback during the consultation will help to shape the new services. Once the consultation feedback has been analysed, decisions will be made about the new services.
