Join the Age Friendly Nottingham (AFN) Steering Group

The AFN steering group is a friendly group of older citizens and older people's representatives that is central to Nottingham developing as an age friendly city. It consists of a diverse range of members with a keen interest in improving the quality of life for older people in the city and meets every three months. We are currently refreshing membership of the group so if you would like to be more involved and help set priorities for action, please contact Sharan Jones at sharan.jones@nottinghamcity.gov.uk to discuss the various options.

Age Friendly Nottingham join Facebook

As part of our committment to engage partnership organisations and public citizens AFN have recently joined Facebook to enable us to share information about the ways in which we intend to achieve our city-wide action plan. This is a great opportunity to keep up to date on the work we have done so far and what is to come. Take a Seat Campaign Older people are encouraging business premises to be more age friendly. Over 100 businesses have now joined the scheme to offer older people a seat if they need to catch their breath when out and about. Changing lives and making friends

Pop Up Café

Older citizens are invited to come along to enjoy afternoon tea at a Pop Up Cafe on Sunday afternoon 13 March 2016, 2.00 pm until 5.30 pm at St. Andrew’s with Castle Gate Church on the corner of Goldsmith Street and Chaucer Street in the city centre NG1 5JT

All are welcome, particularly those who are lonely who need a little extra support. Listen to live music in a warm, friendly environment whilst enjoying low cost homemade cakes, cream teas and much more. We have full disabled access including toilets, a lift and FREE parking. If you would like to book in advance please contact Jill at jill@gaunts.org.uk or just turn up on the day.

Lark Hill Village Open Day Older citizens are invited to attend a FREE open day on 31 March 2016 from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm at Lark Hill Village, New Rise, Clifton, NG11 8BF. The Lark Hill village in Clifton has many different leisure and activity facilities that are also available to the community of the 55+ age for a small annual cost (£60 for single annual membership, £80 for couple membership). With over 70 activities per week to choose from and many interest groups to join it's a great opportunity to try something different and make new friends. Lenton Befriending

Older citizens are invited to come along and meet our Lenton befriending volunteers who meet as part of Tasty Tuesdays where you can enjoy a FREE weekly meal. This is a good way to meet others in the community, chat and enjoy a meal together.

Join us between 3.30 pm - 7.30 pm (with the meal being served at 6.00 pm) at Thomas Hewlys Church, 5-7 Church Square, Lenton, Nottingham, NG7 1SL.

Super Kitchen

Super Kitchen support and manage a network of 30 social eating spaces across Nottingham. Their kitchens and cafes run on surplus food, operating with dynamic menus which change according to what food is available and have a focus on eating at mealtimes 'like a family'. The kitchens are welcoming places to sit and chat and share food and cater for a variety of customers. All meals are affordable. Library Knit and Stitch Clubs

Knit, Stitch and Crochet Clubs are FREE and open to anyone who has an interest in needle and yarn crafts whether you knit, crotchet, cross-stitch, embroider or enjoy any other type of needle crafts. Digital Exclusion and Age Seminar

Older citizens are welcome to attend a seminar on Digital Exclusion and Age on Tuesday 1 March from 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm. The seminar will be led by Jatinder Sandhu, Research Fellow in Sociology, who recently completed working on a major multi-siteproject maintaining people’s use of ICT as they grow older. Please arrive at 1.45 pm and meet in the Nottingham Trent University Chaucer Building Reception, Goldsmith Street, NG1 4BU.

Dementia

Information Programme for Carers of People with Dementia Radford Care Group are offering drop in information programmes for carers of people with dementia every Saturday from 20 February 2016 until the 9 April 2016 between 10.30 am -12.30 pm at Radford Care Group Prospect Street Radford Nottingham NG7 5QE. The groups are led by specialists in dementia. Help with respite services and transport may be available and carers are asked to contribute £2.50 per session towards refreshments. Healthwatch Nottingham Healthwatch Nottingham and Healthwatch Nottinghamshire have launched a joint project which aims to evaluate patient and carer experiences of being diagnosed with dementia, particularly in terms of the information provided during this process. They want to talk to people across Nottinghamshire if they, or someone they care for, have been diagnosed with dementia in the last 12 months. Jobs Fair on Friday 26 February 2016

Older citizens are invited to attend the job's fair that aims to help bust the myths, see ability not disability and offer advice to both employers and employees about working together. This will then be followed by a jobs fair at 11.00 am until 1.00 pm, with Debenhams, Primark, Comfort Call and many more employers. The event is being held at the Bulwell Riverside, Main Street, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8QJ.

Online Today – helping people with sensory loss to get online

Royal National Institute of Blind People a(RNIB) are helping people with sensory loss gain and develop skills that allow them to use technology with confidence.

RNIB are providing support in lots of ways, from home visits to one to one and group sessions, nationwide workshops and events. After talking through your needs, our team will be on hand to give you tailored support and advice, which could include:

• Setting up your email and social media accounts, like Gmail, Twitter and Facebook
• Helping you to chat online using Skype
• Showing you how to use your Tablet or eReader such as an iPad and Kindle
• Support with setting up and using your iPhone or other smartphone
• Showing you how to pay your bills and shop online
• Helping you to use a GPS navigation system

Nottingham City Homes Grander Designs Nottingham City Homes manages over 60 Independent Living Schemes for older citizens on behalf of Nottingham City Council. Grander Designs is a programme for refurbishment and modernisation of the communal areas of these schemes in order to create comfortable, safe and dementia-friendly homes that are also in line with the HAPPI (Housing for the Ageing population) design principles.
