Welcome to the latest edition of Waste and Recycling News from Nottingham City Council. Our e-newsletter will provide you with current information on our services, plus tips and advice on how you can help keep Nottingham clean. 

Changes to your Christmas and New Year bin collections

2015 changes

Because of the public holidays, some green and recycling bin collection days will change. Please check your bin calendar for changes.

Please remember to have your bin out for collection by 7am and be aware that severe weather may affect our collections.

Your new 2015 / 2016 Bin Calendar!

You should have now received your new bin calendar for 2015 / 2016! 

Please keep this calendar in a handy place as it contains important information about bin changes during Christmas and Bank Holidays and important recycling information.

Recycle it Right this Christmas!

Christmas is often a time where people find themselves with extra household waste.

To help our waste crews throughout this period and to manage household waste better, please recycle as much as you can to avoid overflowing bins and side waste.

Recycle Now have also provided some great tips to make use of items like envelopes and leftover paper.

Recycle your real Christmas tree!

When Twelfth Night is over and you want to recycle your real Christmas tree, why not use our special real Christmas tree collection service?

Our FREE service will collect and recycle real Christmas trees from January 4th until January 15th 2016 ONLY

Please book early to avoid any disappointment. To book your collection please call 0115 915 2000.

Your Christmas cards and wrapping paper can also be recycled, just pop them into your grey-lidded brown bin.

Having a clear out this Christmas?

If you are having a clear out this Christmas and New Year, please consider these alternatives to give unwanted items a new home. There are a number of charities and organisations that may be interested in second hand furniture and appliances if they are in good condition:

 

  • British Heart Foundation can collect furniture and electrical items by filling in a web form on their website (look for "Book a free Collection")
  • Freecycle is an online swap shop! Give your old furniture a second lease of life, as well as finding that item you have been looking everywhere for, for free!
  • Re-covered is a new furniture social enterprise supporting the local community that welcomes donations of furniture in a repairable or reusable condition - arrange a free collection using their online form, http://www.recoveredfurniture.org/#!order-form/co2h
  • Remar UK is a Nottingham based charity shop, Tel: 0115 924 4274
  • Haven Housing Trust is a local charity providing supported accommodation for older homeless people in Nottingham, they also accept donations of good, clean furniture and household goods and arrange a free collection, Tel: 0115 985 6546
  • Redfield Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre is a special facility in Nottingham where you can take your separated recycling, garden waste and household waste

    Do you know where your local food bank is?

    Food poverty continues to be a serious issue across the UK despite the economic recovery, as figures published by the Trussell Trust this winter showed the number of people helped by food banks in the first half of the 2014-15 financial year is 38% higher than numbers helped during the same period last year.

    If you still have a lot of Christmas food left over - why not donate it to your local food bank? The Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service has compiled a list of local food banks - click here for further information.

    Clean for the Queen

    In the run up to The Queen's 90th birthday on 21 April 2016, Keep Britain Tidy are aiming to inspire a million people to take action and enjoy a few hours together litter-picking to make the places where we live more beautiful. For Her and for us all, we want to attack the blight of litter and reclaim our beautiful countryside, our fabulous cities, our world class parks, our wonderful beaches and waterways.

    There will be ‘Clean for The Queen’ litter blitzes throughout the UK in January, February and March, and the most monumental of all litter clear-ups from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 March 2016.

    In Nottingham, we want to take this opportunity to get people together to take ownership of their neighbourhoods and provide them with the tools and resources to do so.
