Winter weather is now upon us… so it’s vital that we all keep an eye on older friends, neighbours and relatives as the cold snap starts to tighten its grip.
Nottingham City Council is asking for people to check on those they think could be at risk, even just to see if they need essentials from the shops. They could be in serious need of help, but you won’t know until you check.

Nottingham City Council is launching a new plan with schools, aimed at getting more pupils ready for work.
City schools are being asked to sign up to the Employability in Schools Strategy where pupils have an opportunity to meet with an employer in every school year from Primary onwards.
The council has already been supporting 16 to 18 year olds to get them to stay in education, enter employment or training. However, in order that local employers have access to a skilled workforce, young people need to be ready for the world of work, starting from primary school.

Parents of children due to start primary school next September can now apply for their child’s place.
Anyone with children born between September 1, 2011, and August 31, 2012, must fill in the application form before January 15, 2016.
If a child lives in Nottingham city and is due to start at infant or primary school in September 2016, you will be able to apply for a school place from today.

Middleton Primary and Nursery School has become one of only 250 schools in the UK and the first in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire to be recognised with the highest level UNICEF “Rights Respecting Schools Award”.
Lilian Greenwood MP will be joining children, staff, parents and governors at a special celebration event on the afternoon of Thursday 26 November.

A wide range of travel options and offers are available to people visiting Nottingham over the festive season.
As Nottingham is poised to switch on its Christmas lights and open the Winter Wonderland on Friday (November 20), the City Council is promoting its public transport and car park offers to festive shoppers, while also scaling back roadworks to make it as easy as possible for visitors to get in and out of the city.

New figures collected for the Department for Education music survey show that Nottingham is scoring well above the national average in many areas:
- 19% of Nottingham pupils are learning an instrument, nationally that that is 15%
- 51% of young people in Nottingham continue playing after their whole class ensemble experience, the national average is 32%
- Nearly 30% of Nottingham children progress from being beginners to NQF level 1, against the national average of 20%
A record number of young people in Nottingham gained a national music grade or music medal through the Nottingham Music Hub in 2015 – up by more than 200% from 2013.

Nottingham City Council is calling on creative up-cyclers or keen re-furbishers to support a reuse project next year.
‘Trash to Treasure’ is a series of innovation exhibitions and workshops celebrating creative upcycling. They will run across a series of venues in Nottingham City Centre in February and March 2016.
