Happy International Older People’s Day! Age Friendly Nottingham has been celebrating this special day since Monday when older people staged a sit-in at the front of the Council House to launch Nottingham’s ‘Take A Seat’ campaign (more details are given later in this bulletin). Partners across the city have celebrated older people by holding information events, tea dances, guided walks and much, much more.  If you have any good photos or stories that you would like to share with us, please let us know. • Drop into the large ‘Spiegel’ tent to participate in an afternoon of STRICTLY AGE FRIENDLY DANCING opening with Tap Dancing dancing at 1.30

Nottingham ‘Take A Seat’ Campaign A warm welcome to Nottingham’s first participants in the ‘Take A Seat’ initiative – Thomas Helwys Church in Lenton and the Nottingham Visitor Information Centre on the Market Square.  Following in the footsteps of New York and Manchester, Age Friendly Nottingham invites businesses and retail premises to become age friendly and join our ‘Take A Seat’ initiative.  All we ask is that you display the ‘We are age friendly’ sticker and be prepared to offer a seat to an older people if they are passing by and need to take the weight off their fee and catch their breath. Public Health Forum on Loneliness in Nottingham City

Older Persons Celebration Event for Clifton, Silverdale and Wilford

Please come and join us on Thursday 5th November 2015, 10am to2pm at Clifton Methodist Church at Rivergreen, Clifton, NG11 8AU .

We are celebrating older people living in Clifton and free hot refreshments will be available.

Charity Tea Dance with the Lord Mayor Councillor Jackie Morris at the Council House

The Lord Mayor regulalry hosts a charity tea dance at the Council House. The next dance will be held on the 15 December 2015. Tickets at £3 each will go on sale from 10.30am on 1 December 2015 at the Reception desk in the Council House. There will be a maximum of 4 tickets per person.

Mature Movers at Nottingham Playhouse Every Wednesday, 7 October – 16 December 1.30 – 3.00 Running every Wednesday until 16 December - join a fun, lively and friendly dance session for those aged 60+ who want to learn new skills, keep active and meet new people. Prices: £6.00 per session, or £5.00 if booking more than 5 sessions in one go. If you would love to be involved in Golden Age but feel that you cannot meet the weekly costs, we have a small number of bursaries available for each group, where either all or some of the costs are met by the Playhouse. Nature in Mind

Nature in Mind is a Framework service for adults in Nottingham which draws on the unique capacity of nature to restore and improve mental and physical health. It is aimed at supporting people with mental health problems, and promoting wellbeing and recovery, through engagement with nature-related activities in Nottingham City. Activities include walking in nature, gardening, conservation, wildlife identification, arts and crafts on natural themes and visits to gardens, farms and nature reserves.

This booklet, published as part of Older People’s Day by Public Health England, tackles common myths about falling. A checklist helps you to decide whether you’re at risk of a fall, with information on balance, muscle strength and more. How do you find Information and Advice for Care and Support Services in Nottingham? Healthwatch Nottingham are keen to ensure Nottingham residents are able to access the information and advice they need about the care adults need (including information for carers). They are supporting Nottingham City Council to find out how you get information on care and support services and what is good or difficult about this. If you would like to contribute, please click here. Or you can contact 0115 859 9510 to request printed copies. Completing the survey should take 5-10 minutes. Responses will be used to help develop Nottingham City Council's Information and Advice Strategy. No personal information will be shared.

Think CO - Promoting Carbon Monoxide Awareness

Organisations are supporting a new and important project led by the Gas Safe Charity. The Think CO campaign aims to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Each year about 40 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning and 2,000 people end up in accident and emergency departments and awarness needs to be raised of the dangers.

Volunteers Needed To Help Children With Their Reading Are you interested in a rewarding and fun role? Literacy Volunteers are looking for volunteers aged 18-80 to help primary school children in Nottingham with their reading and communication skills. Volunteers read, talk and play word games with selected children on a one-to-one basis away from the classroom, to give them confidence and help them enjoy reading and communicating. You do not need any formal qualifications - training and ongoing support is provided. Volunteers will be vetted through the Disclosure and Barring Service.  If you are interested in joining please email contact@literacyvolunteers.org.uk or telephone 0115 8765474. www.literacyvolunteers.org.uk
