Nottingham is a great place to grow older and Age Friendly Nottingham is celebrating the value and unique contribution of its older citizens during Older People’s Week from 28 September to 2 October 2015, and showcasing what is available for citizens aged 50+. The week kicks off with an event at the Council House on Monday 28 September which will also include Celebrating the progress of the Older Citizens’ Charter Launching Nottingham’s ‘Take A Seat’ campaign to encourage businesses and shops to offer a seat in their premises for older people A broad selection of information stalls featuring employment and volunteering opportunities, learning and skills development, health and wellbeing, tax help and much more. A programme of activities for across the city is being pulled together featuring the contributions of partners eg Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, and events being staged in local areas eg an information event is being held at Bulwell Riverside on 1 October.  More details will follow in the September Age Friendly Nottingham Bulletin. Click Nottingham Did you know that Nottingham Circle is now Click Nottingham?  Click Nottingham understands how important friendships and social connections are to health and wellbeing and so a large part of their focus is on bringing people together.  Members can access a quarterly social calendar full of events such as walks, guided tours, gardening, lunches, nights out, theatre and day trips. Can Samba!

'Can Samba' working with City Arts offers a range of sessions for older people.  Different levels of activity are offered including gentle seated social exercise, aimed at those who maybe haven’t done any exercise in a while.  Social dance sessions are also offered for reasonably active people. Drinks, cake and conversation (or just company) are available before and after the session.

Classes are held Tuesday's at City Arts, 11-13 Hockley, Nottingham, NG1 1FH during Term 1 Sep-Oct (29 Sep, 6, 13 Oct) and Term 2 Nov-Dec (3, 10, 17, 24 Nov, 1 Dec) 

• 2.00-4.00pm – Seated Samba - £1-2 donations
• 4.00-6.00pm – Slow Samba – £1-2 donations

The One Nottingham Age-friendly Forum 2 October 2015, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm To mark Nottingham Older People’s week and the International Day of Older Persons, the One Notting-ham Forum will review and celebrate the week’s activity. The forum will mark the contribution which old-er citizens of Nottingham make to the wellbeing of the city and it will debate how partners support the Older Citizen’s Charter.  To register, or for more information email general@onenottingham.org.uk

Making New Moves and Building New Futures A new course for older learners (over 55) is being developed at Nottingham Trent University, to run from Autumn 2016, on using social sciences (such as psychology) to enrich later life, and leading to a Postgraduate Certificate. To prepare for this, an associated course is planned “Enriching Later Life through Social Science”, beginning October 2015, involving two 10-week classes, “Introducing Social Sciences” and “Ageing in Britain today”  in the autumn and spring terms. Each course will cost £300,  running for 3 hours a week at the Nottingham Mechanics Institute in the City Centre. Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2015 for Notts Age UK

Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its wide-ranging work in helping local older people eg offering a regular visiting service to older people who are lonely or socially isolated, helping older people to claim rightful benefits and offering free, confidential and impartial support on personal, practical, financial and legal matters.  For more information on any of their services go to Age UK Nottinghamshire.

Nottingham Fit for Work

This free service is commissioned by Nottingham City CCG and Nottingham City Council for Nottingham residents. Nottingham Fit for Work provides a team of workplace health case managers who provide tailored advice, support and treatment to clients struggling with health issues which impact their ability to get back to and sustain in employment.  For more information call 0116 2851710 or email admin@fitforworkteam.org

Access to Work

 An Access to Work grant can pay for practical support if you have a disability, health or mental health condition to help you start working, stay in work or move into self-employment or start a business.  Your condition must affect your ability to do a job or mean you have to pay work-related costs eg special computer equipment or travel costs because you can’t use public transport.  If you have a mental health problem affecting your ability to do a job support is available to start a new job, reduce absence from work or stay in work.

Understanding Pensions: Your Future

National Pensioners Convention (NPC) are holding a free talk on pensions: outlining up-rating, new state pension, freedoms and initiatives, access to lump sum and auto enrolment. There will be several speakers representing DWP, NPC and Unite.  The event will take place on Saturday 9th September 2015 at 1:15pm, at Nottingham Mechanics, 7 North Sherwood Street, NG1 4EZ. DWP has produced PensionTube - a series of short videos which cut out all the complicated jargon around pensions and equip you with essential information for your retirement.

Nottingham Falls and Bone Health Awareness Day

Talking Treatments

Talking Treatments support people who may be experiencing unhappiness, anxiety and stress but many older people appear reluctant to take-up this free service available through their GP.  To encourage more participation a short Talking Treatments film has been produced specifically for older people. 

Be Clear on Cancer, ‘Breast cancer in women over 70’  Did you know that 1 in 3 women who get breast cancer are over 70?  This campaign emphasises that ‘a lump is not the only sign of breast cancer’.   Other possible signs of breast cancer include a lump in the armpit or changes to the nipple, skin of the breast or breast shape or size.  If a woman has any of these symptoms, she should contact her doctor straight away.  For further information visit www.nhs.uk/breastcancer70

Dementia

Imagine Training Imagine is a 3-year project that uses the arts to enrich the lives of older care home residents - involving them in the wider community and support them to connect with people of all ages.  They are offering three training programmes over the autumn: Monday 14 September 2015 - Using iPad’s creatively with older people in care Monday 21 September 2015 - Creativity and the ageing brain Friday 20 November 2015 - Understanding Dementia For more information go to the Imagine website.

Harvey Hadden Sports Village is to offer Dementia Friendly Swimming Sessions from October 2015.  The following are an example of what will be on offer

Living well with dementia video

This Living Well with Dementia video features personal insight from patients, carers and professionals. It looks at living well with early onset dementia and how to get involved in research opportunities through Join Dementia Research.  The film is in English but has also been translated into Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati, Hindi, Polish, and  Cantonese.   

New service empowers the public to take part in vital dementia research

Dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK, with 25 million of the UK population having a close friend or family member affected. Join Dementia Research is a new service that aims to boost research participation by connecting people interested in research to suitable dementia studies across the East Midlands. A short animation has been developed to explain more about Join Dementia Research and what is involved.  Anyone aged 18 years or over can sign up themselves, or on behalf of someone else, either by registering online or by contacting the helplines of Alzheimer’s Research UK (0300 111 5 111) and Alzheimer’s Society (0300 222 1122).
