In this edition of Waste and Recycling News we welcome guest contributor - Janet Wootton - who creates upcycled jewellery made from recycled data cabling and then sells it to benefit local charities.

"Another Change seems to fit the bill as the title for my latest foray into recycling and upcycling- reusing and transforming materials into new art and craft.

"Now some people might consider me a hoarder! But I believe the wide variety of materials in my home studio which have been given to me, or are remaining after earlier art projects, are a veritable treasure trove and a great inspiration.

"The passion for “leftovers” started during my Masters studies at Nottingham Trent University . I graduated with an MA in Fine Art three years ago after two years part-time study. Climate change, waste issues and discovering ways to reuse materials, became central to creating a sustainable art practice.

"An art project idea incorporating data cabling led me to acquiring heaps of recycled multi-coloured cable from a friend with an IT business. On completion of the art work I took a second look at the remaining supplies of rainbow stranded cable and considered the next step: waste recycling or upcycling.

"And so Another Change was born - a range of retro-style jewellery, designed and made by me from recycled data cabling. I have created bangles with magnetic clasps, pendants, brooches and earrings.

"The range has been well received by a range of people of all ages. At first I gave the jewellery as gifts then I decided the way forward was to change it into a bit of a social enterprise to give back into the community and now sell the range to benefit local charities."

Janet's Top Tip: "Let your creative spirit wander as you contemplate whether to throw away materials and products. You will be surprised at the choices and opportunities and the sense of a good job done when potential waste becomes some reusable and decorative.”

Our Neighbourhood Services Teams have been working hard with partners across the city on many Days of Action and Clean Ups to help spruce up neighbourhoods!

Wollaton West Ward: A partnership approach between Nottingham City Council,  Places for People, Nottinghamshire Police, Tuntum Housing Association staff and other partners ensured a very successful three Days of Action took place on the Grangewood Estate.

The residents were very pleased with the services provided which included teams from Nottingham City Council's Neighbourhood Services carrying out special Bulky Waste Collections on the estate. 

Basford: The Cleaning Team in Basford set about tackling an alleyway between Nuthall Road and Stockhill Circus to make it more accessible for citizens.

City Centre: The City Centre Cleaning Team transformed an alleyway on Bluecoat Close that was previously inaccessible.

Dunkirk and Lenton: The fantastic teams in Dunkirk and Lenton carried out a deep clean in student areas.

Radford: Great team work in Radford to carry out three days deep cleaning of the Lenton Triangle area!

We have received a lot of positive feedback about the great work our Neighbourhood Services Garden Assistance Teams are doing!

Nottingham City Homes provides a free garden service in partnership with Nottingham City Council to help tenants keep their garden tidy. Nearly 80% of  tenants that have been surveyed say they are satisfied with this service.

After feedback from surveys last year, we are also collecting the grass cuttings each time, rather than leave them behind.

To be eligible for this scheme you must be a tenant of Nottingham City Homes and:

I. in receipt of low level carer Disability Living Allowance and /or high level mobility Disability Living Allowance or

II.　Personal Independence Payment or

III. aged 70 or above and

IV. have no able bodied adult living within the household;

V.  Not have rent arrears in excess of £100 unless a repayment plan is in place and being maintained.
