Notts and Derbyshire devo deal leading the way
Ground breaking proposals for devolving powers from central
government to the East Midlands are being seen as a model for many other UK
regions, according to local councils in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. In his budget speech this week, Chancellor George Osborne
highlighted the progress being made with ‘devolution deals’ in several regions
as part of a major shake-up in the way the country is run.
City celebrates pupils with the best school attendance
Hundreds of school pupils were recognised for their
excellent attendance and behaviour at a huge celebration in Nottingham. Games, activities, music and performances were held at The
Lord Mayor’s Awards for Schools on Thursday. Primary and secondary
schools were asked to nominate two pupils as ‘ambassadors’ to attend the event
at the Britannia Hotel in Nottingham.
Lessons on the right lines for learning about trams
Children aged three to 11 from Welbeck Primary and Nursery
School, who have been studying lesson plans created by a Nottingham teacher to
help them learn about the coming of the tram, were rewarded for their efforts
when a tram came calling at a stop just by their school.
A Year of Volunteering was launched by Councillor Jackie Morris when she was sworn in as Lord Mayor at Nottingham Castle on Saturday 4 July. During her year in office, the Lord Mayor will promote volunteering and charitable giving under the banner of Looking After Each Other – a city-wide campaign to increase volunteering in Nottingham.
Nottingham Castle will be the scene of
a major archaeological dig starting on Monday 13 July. Professional
archaeologists from Trent & Peak Archaeology and from York Archaeological
Trust will be on site to excavate an area in the Outer Bailey, near the
bandstand and close to the curtain wall overlooking Castle Road. This area has
never been excavated before. The dig will run from 13 July to 14 August.
The Nottingham Business Improvement District’s (BID’s) floral trail and Sweeper sculptures, both joint initiatives with Nottingham City Council, will be among the sights seen by the judge of the ‘BIDs in Bloom’ category of the annual East Midlands in Bloom competition. Doug Stacey of East Midlands in Bloom visited the city this week to assess the BID area of the city centre for horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.
