What changes did you make for National Recycle Week?

Recycling Postcard

In our last newsletter we detailed some hints and tips as part of National Recycle Week to help reduce contamination in recycling bins.

Have you made any changes to support the campaign? Please let us know via our social media channels below so we can feature the positive changes!

Our work to increase recycling and reduce contamination doesn't stop - we have some fantastic bus advertising across the city with the message 'No Plastic Bags in your Recycling Bin!' and our Waste Advisors are continuing to work with residents in hotspot neighbourhoods to support them with recycling.

Don't forget these top tips!

1)      Please do not bag your recycling – just put it loose in your grey lidded recycling bin

2)      These common household items CAN NOT be recycled:

·         Pizza Boxes

·         Large Cooking Oil Cans

·         Take away tubs

·         Tetra Paks/Juice Cartons.

If you are not sure whether something is recyclable or not, don’t take a chance, leave it out of your recycling bin!

International Plastic Bag Free Day!

Did you know that on Friday July 3rd it is International Plastic Bag Free Day?

Can you challenge yourself, friends and family to go without plastic bags for a day? Or even a week?

Over 3 trillion plastic bags are used every year worldwide and each bag takes over 400 years to biodegrade!

So what are the alternatives? Have you thought of what you could use instead?

  •  Re-usable bags, such as cotton bags or long life bags
  •  Rucksacks
  •  Boxes
  •  Baskets
  •  Trolleys

Why not set yourself the #noplasticbag challenge!

Food Saving Tips!

Love Food Hate Waste

It's great that we are experiencing some lovely hot weather - not so great for food though if it isn't stored properly and goes to waste.

The fabulous people at Love Food Hate Waste have prepared an A - Z list of food and how it should be stored properly so it will keep for longer -  reducing waste and saving you money!

You can check it out here

Our favourite is using leftover food as sandwich filler. Apparently even leftover curry makes a tasty sandwich filling!

Working to Keep our Neighbourhoods Clean!

Student Clean Ups

Our Cleaning Teams have been working hard over the last several weeks to support students who are leaving the city and to ensure neighbourhoods are kept clean.

Our Neighbourhood Services Teams for the Arboretum and Lenton areas have put in place a full time response crew to help keep our neighbourhoods clean and support students in clearing household waste as they leave the city.

The crew, along with support from Waste Advisors in the area, have been clearing and advising students and landlords on waste related issues such as side waste, waste in front gardens, bins on street (reporting and returning these to front gardens) Crews have also been clearing waste from main roads and driveways.

Adding a splash of colour to our neighbourhoods!

Keverne Close

Following on from our work in Bulwell and Radford, our teams have been busy supporting Nottingham City Homes in brightening up some of their Independent Living Schemes as part of the Greener Designs Project.

Our teams have recently finished work at Keverne Close in Aspley, where they have been working on making the front of the building more colourful.

Designs for the areas have been decided through consultation with residents living in the schemes, and the work has been carried out by our Street Scene Teams and Apprentices.

This is a great project that will not only have a massive improvement to the outlook of these schemes but will also have a positive effect to the people living there as the designs will be creative and inspiring.
