Nottingham will hold a day of celebration on Saturday 4 July as Councillor Jackie Morris is sworn in as the new Lord Mayor. The celebration includes a free fun day and free entry for everyone at Nottingham Castle.
Nottingham’s hosting of the tenth annual UK Light Rail Conference has been declared a resounding success after attracting record numbers of delegates and exhibitors as the event returned to the Nottingham Conference Centre for the second year in succession.
The conference, held on Wednesday and Thursday (June 17-18), attracted nearly 300 delegates, exhibitors and speakers from all over the world and from every tram-operating city in the UK.
Nottingham City Council has been honoured with 3 prestigious national awards for its innovative work to drive up standards.
Frontline services, business support and a campaign to improve school attendance were all praised at the MJ Local Government Achievement Awards ceremony in London on Thursday 18 June.
The awards were for:
Neighbourhood Services who won the prestigious Best Council Service Team category for innovation in the face of decreasing budgets
Delivering Better Outcomes by boosting school attendance by over 5,661 days in Autumn 2014.
Nottingham City Council’s Business Support Team was praised in the Best Children’s Service category for its innovative work to provide employment opportunities for young people leaving care.
The old Gardener’s Cottage, situated in the heart of the gardens surrounding Newstead Abbey, once the home of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, is to be restored so that it can be hired by holiday makers visiting Nottinghamshire. Built in the 1860s by the Webb family and positioned just a few minutes’ walk from the Abbey itself, the cottage is nestled amongst mature trees and shrubs and overlooks the original Rose Garden.
A new exhibition featuring paintings from acclaimed artists including Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Walter Sickert and Richard Hamilton opened at Nottingham Castle on Saturday 20 June.
One Day, Something Happens is a touring exhibition from the Arts Council Collection which examines the portrait during the 20th and 21st centuries. It is curated by the co-editor of Frieze magazine Jennifer Higgie.
