The Kick-Start Challenge is a small business start-up competition sponsored by the CEO of one of the world's largest suppliers of sports programming, Matchroom Sport.

Successful applicants could receive £500 seed money and the opportunity to run their own business for six months. They will also be matched up with a local business mentor.

The session is open to all young people aged 16-21 living in Havering, regardless of where they are studying. Click here to register.

Thursday 5 March, from 4pm to 6pm, is the key date for the Kick-Start Event, in The Space at the Havering College Ardleigh Green Campu, when young entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to hear from Barry Hearn and guest speakers, and meet business mentors. Applicants should bring their completed forms and business proposal to the event.

Planning for future technology

Havering businesses are urged to take part in the Great London Tech Census commissioned by the London Enterprise Panel and backed by the Mayor of London.

Every tech business in London is being asked to provide seven pieces of non-sensitive information through the Great London Tech Census.

Completing the Census will take only two minutes. The more companies that take part the better the grounding for future policy.

Every business that participates will also be featured in The Great London Tech Map, a groundbreaking web-based resource showcasing London’s science and technology industry that will launch in 2015.

Safer Lorry Zone sign

HGVs face ban unless safe

From Tuesday 1 September, HGVs will need safeguards to protect cyclists and improved mirrors to give drivers a better view round their vehicle if they want to enter London inside the M25.

The Mayor of London , Boris Johnson, Transport for London (TfL) and London Councils have given the go-ahead for a London-wide ban on any lorry not fitted with safety equipment to protect cyclists and pedestrians.

Traffic orders implementing the Safer HGV Zone  scheme are currently being published. Installation of road signs at the London boundary, training of police officers and information campaigns with drivers and hauliers have all started.

The scheme will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be enforced by the police, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and the joint TfL and DfT-funded Industrial HGV Taskforce (IHTF).

The maximum fine for each breach of the ban will be £1,000. The operator will also be referred for consideration to the relevant Traffic Commissioner, who is responsible for the licensing and regulation of HGV operators.
