Clean for the Queen takes place from Friday
4 to Sunday 6 March and is a campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her
Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in
June 2016.
When she came to the throne
litter was not the problem it is today so during that weekend the aim is for
community groups, businesses, schools and individuals to spend an hour or two
clearing litter from part of their neighbourhood. We all know a local place
where litter gathers, so register your interest in a Havering Clean for the Queen event here and
let’s get it cleared up.

Reduce your food waste to win an Ice Cream Maker
Havering residents are being challenged to pledge to
reduce their food waste, to be in with a chance of winning an Andrew James Ice
Cream Maker.
Pledges
can be simple ones such as I will use a spaghetti
measurer to measure my spaghetti portions or I will buy loose potatoes
instead of a bag of them so that I only buy what I need.
All you need to do is post your pledge on the Love
Food Hate Waste Havering Facebook page, then 'Like' and
'Share' the page with your Facebook Friends and Family to show your commitment. Terms and conditions apply.
You will be entered in a prize draw to win an
Andrew James Ice Cream Maker, which can help you use up excess or over-ripened
fruits to create yummy ice creams or healthy frozen yoghurts or sorbets.Deadline for entries is Friday 29 April.
Check here
for some great tips and ideas for reducing food waste at home, including recipes
for using leftover food.

Help us catch fly tippers
On Wednesday 27 January fly tipping
happened again in Sunnings Lane, Upminster, blocking the road for some time. If
you have any information about who is responsible for this fly tipping, or see
incidents elsewhere in Havering, please let us know.
As well as making our Borough
look unsightly the cost of removing fly tipping is considerable, around
£136,000 a year, and means less money available for front line services.
Havering Council prosecutes fly tippers whenever possible.
Report fly tipping online here.

Recycling centre upgrades
So far 22
recycling sites in various locations across the Borough have undergone
improvements making them look cleaner and smarter, while raising awareness of
the site and making them more appealing to residents. The most recently
transformed sites are Haynes Park car park (pictured), off Slewins Lane
Hornchurch, Angel Way, Romford and
Station Parade in Elm Park.
|
Station Parade is one of our biggest recycling sites
and is very well used by local residents, so we were delighted to be able to
incorporate the new units in to this site, making a vast improvement.
Free composting workshops
Ever
thought about composting? A third of average household rubbish can be
composted, so you can make excellent food for your plants while recycling and
reducing much of your black sack waste.
Havering’s
Recycling Team is offering free composting workshops on:
Wednesday 2 March, 10am – noon, Romford
Library, St Edwards Way, Romford, RM1 3AR
Saturday 9 April, 10am – noon, Thames Chase Forest Centre,
Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster, RM14 3NS.
Please book your place here.
We
also offer compost bins to Havering residents at a heavily discounted price to help you
get started. More information available here.

Reuse and recycle small electrical items
We now collect certain small, household, electrical
items. Just put them in a securely tied carrier bag and leave them next to your
orange sacks on your usual collection day.
See the full list of what we will collect here.
Waste less food,
save money
On
average 44 per cent of black sack content in Havering is food waste, so let’s try to
reduce this figure to both help the environment and save ourselves some
money! It is estimated that the average family can save up to £60 per
month by reducing food waste at home.
If you are interested
in reducing your food waste and saving money then register for a Free Love Food Hate Waste
cookery workshop.
