and the law
Retailers
are reminded they can only sell fireworks to the general public between Thursday
15 October and Tuesday 10 November. The
maximum penalty is a £5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. Full details of the law are

Free CPC
driver training for Havering businesses
Havering
businesses can register their HGV/LGV drivers for free Certificate
of Professional Competence (CPC) accredited safer urban driver training.
Funded by Transport for London, the one-day course focuses
on safe driving around vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists, to
increase safety on London’s roads. There are
several dates from Monday 9 November to Wednesday 17 February, but places are limited so book
now to avoid disappointment.

Generic Outreach Support Services
Havering Council invites businesses to a market testing
day on Thursday 12 November at Hornchurch
Library, from 1.30pm to 4pm to discuss the Council’s generic outreach
support services.
The contract will provide short term, targeted support to
people living in the community.
Interested providers are invited to register their
interest via email, quoting
reference number 209-370564, by Friday 6 November. Places are limited so an
early response is appreciated.
Help not Hospital
Havering
Council invites businesses to a market testing day on Monday 30 November at the
Town Hall, from 3pm to 5pm to discuss the Council’s hospital discharge and
outreach support service.
The
contract will provide short term support to vulnerable adults so they can
regain their independence in their own home.
Interested
providers are invited to register their interest via email, quoting reference
number 209-379685, by Friday 27 November. Places are limited so an early
response is appreciated.

Buses for business
Bus route 174, which runs between Harold Hill and
Dagenham, has been extended to serve CEME
on Marsh Way, Rainham on Sundays, in line with the Monday to Saturday service.
This is in order to improve transport links in the area.

Illegal sales
are costly in court for Elm Park retailers
Havering Council has had two successful
prosecutions of Elm Park retailers selling alcohol to people under 18.
Both cases were heard at Barkingside Magistrates
Court on Friday 25 September 2015. Sercan Ates from
Sparkling Food and Wine pleaded guilty to selling a bottle of wine to a person under 18, was ordered to pay a total of
£1031.75 while Caner Cocelli, the designated premises supervisor at Kotan
supermarket, which traded as Elm Park Express in Broadway Parade, was ordered to pay a total of £3,320. He pleaded guilty to five offences - one licensing offence
for an underage sale of alcohol, one offence under the licensing act for
keeping smuggled goods on the premises, one offence under the Consumer
Protection Act for lack of English labelling on the cigarettes and two offences
under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

Food
courses to
boost business
The
Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Level 2 Award in Food
Hygiene and Catering courses are run at Romford Baptist Church, Main Road,
Romford, RM1 3BL.
All
the courses are on Tuesdays, starting at 9.15am and ending at 4.30pm. The
next proposed course date is 17 November.

Silvertown Tunnel
Transport for London is running a consultation about plans
for a new tunnel under the River Thames at Silvertown to open in 2022/23. The
new tunnel would ease congestion at the Blackwell Tunnel. The consultation closes
on Sunday 29 November 2015.

Private hire regulations
Transport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation on potential changes to
the regulations that govern the London’s private hire trade.
These include proposals to improve driver
skills, including English language capabilities and stricter requirements for
insurance, as well as proposals around the way private hire operators can
accept bookings and changes to how bookings are recorded.
Deadline for responding to the consultation
is Wednesday 23 December.
Meet
the neighbours with Macmillan
Staff
at Medinova moved
into Blackburn House, Eastern Road, Romford, this summer and decided they could
get to know their neighbours and raise money for cancer research by holding a coffee
and cake morning for Macmillan.
The event raised more than £30 for the charity.

Can you claim
Business Rate Relief?
If your business occupies
retail properties with a rateable value of £50,000 or less and is wholly or
mainly used as a shop, restaurant, cafe or drinking establishment you could be
entitled to business rate relief.
The relief that will apply is
up to £1,000 for 2014/15 and £1,500 from the 2015/16 financial year. More information available
