Be sharp, be safe

In recent weeks waste collection crews have narrowly missed injuries due to syringes, broken glass, knives and other sharp objects being placed in refuse and recycling sacks.

Such items should be wrapped in newspaper and put in a container next to the sacks, clearly labelled as containing broken glass or other sharp objects.

Syringes and other hazardous healthcare wastes should never be disposed of in the domestic waste stream.

Curry, bleach and pepper

Please do not put bleach, pepper or curry powder on top of refuse bags to stop animal damage – this is a very hazardous practice and can be an irritant if the collection crews are splashed in the eyes when handling the refuse bags.

Fly-tipping costs builder £4,829

Fly tipping Poynter Little Gerpins Lane 110714

Havering Council is continuing its campaign to take fly-tippers to court and has had another recent success.

Mr Liam Poynter, a builder of 70 Maxey Road, Dagenham, was engaged by a householder in Belvedere through the MyBuilder.com website, to complete some decorating work and remove waste.

On 11 July 2014, this waste, which included building and decorating products, a table, radiator cover and packaging material, was dumped in Little Gerpins Lane, Upminster, a regular spot for fly-tipping. Havering’s officers found evidence at the scene, linking the waste to Mr Poynter.

At Barkingside Magistrates Court on 25 September 2015, Mr Poynter failed to attend but was found guilty and fined £3,000, with costs of £1,169 and a victim surcharge of £120, a total £4,289.

Your Council, Your Say logo

Have your say on open spaces

The Council is currently preparing an Open Space, Allotments, Sports and Recreation Needs Assessment.

This study will form an important part of the evidence base for Havering’s emerging Local Plan and will have a key role in planning for the provision of open space, sports and recreation facilities in the Borough.

The Assessment will consider the current quantity, quality and accessibility of open space in the Borough and will seek to determine what future provision is needed.

The online residents survey gives you the chance to make your views known.

Deadline for replies is Tuesday 3 November.

A fantastic way to help improve your local area is to organise a community clean-up. Havering Council can help you organise a clean-up by providing posters to promote your event, clean-up equipment and removal of any rubbish you collect. If you are interested in volunteering for a clean-up, email Kim Smith.

If you would like to organise your own community clean up, email here.
