Workplace Health Week bring cycling benefits
Employers and employees across Havering are invited to show their
commitment to workplace health and wellbeing by supporting Workplace Health
Week.
Join this week-long celebration from Monday 18 May to
Friday 22 May and pledge
your commitment to workplace health.
Businesses can make a practical step towards increasing
the physical activity of employees by registering with TfL Cycling Workplaces,
to receive free cycle training for employees, as well as cycle stands, bike
checks and a cycle safety seminar.

Food
courses to
boost business
Staff
in food businesses across Havering can gain new qualifications and help their business
meet tough food regulations and hygiene standards thanks to a series of courses
organised by Havering Council.
The
Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Level 2 Award in Food
Hygiene and Catering courses will be run at Romford Baptist Church, Main Road,
Romford, RM1 3BL.
All
the courses are on Tuesdays, starting at 9.15am and ending at 4.30pm.

Mercury Mall looking to
win second energy award
The Mercury Mall, in Romford, is aiming to
win its second Sceptre Award for energy efficiency.
In 2012 it
won the energy category for the solar panels installed to generate electricity
for the shopping centre.
This year
the entry is for the use of LED lights in the shopping centre. More than 90 per
cent of the lights are now LED resulting in lower running costs and less carbon
emissions. The awards
ceremony is in July.

for Father’s Day
Businesses in
Romford Shopping Hall are
joining forces to offer Havering fathers a makeover.
To nominate
a father for a Shopping Hall Stylie, worth £200 including a haircut, manicure
and back massage, post an embarrassing photo of your Dad on the Shopping Hall’s
Facebook page along with 100 words explaining why a makeover is needed.

Networking and Apprenticeships
Havering Chamber
of Commerce and Industry is holding a Business and Social Networking evening between
6pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday 20 May, at Havering College, Ardleigh
Green Road, Hornchurch, RM11 2LL.
The first guest speaker, Laurie Edmunds, will talk about how your business can
benefit from the intelligent use of Social Media as a marketing tool.
This talk will be followed by a presentation from Lucy Hunter of Havering

Havering Council, in partnership with Right Choice Insurance Group,
is planning a Business to Business event to be held on Thursday 16 July in
Eastern Road, Romford.
The event will showcase businesses in Havering and encourage
local businesses to use local suppliers. It will also be an opportunity for
local businesses to network and employees to experience what’s available in
Romford.

Cash help to create child-care
If you’re thinking of starting a child-care business or
nursery the Government has announced that the Childcare Business Grant is being
doubled and that businesses which have received their OFSTED certificate in the
last year can also benefit from the scheme.
Under the scheme up to £1,000 can be received to help a new
child-care business.

The future of
the High Street
Artist and
designer Kevin Smeeing, will be leading a programme of events at The Quadrant,
Market Place, Romford until Friday 12 June, as part of The future of the High
Street initiative.
Kevin said:
“I am exploring what these vacant spaces on the High Street could become. This
is more than just another pop-up shop, this
project looks at truly inclusive alternatives to the redevelopment of the High
Street.”

The London Cycle
Challenge
Havering businesses can take part in the
three week challenge, which starts on Monday 8 June, and get staff cycling this summer.
Businesses with the highest percentage of staff taking part will be rewarded
with experiences, VIP tickets, cycling vouchers and clothing along with lunches
and flowers delivered by bike.

HGVs face ban in safer zone
From Tuesday 1 September, HGVs
will need safeguards to protect cyclists, and improved mirrors to give drivers a
better view around their vehicle if they want to enter London inside the M25.
The scheme will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, and will be enforced by the police, the Driver
and Vehicle Standards Agency and the joint TfL and DfT-funded Industrial HGV Taskforce
(IHTF).
The maximum fine for each breach of the ban will be
£1,000. The operator will also be referred for consideration to the relevant Traffic Commissioner, who is responsible for the licensing and regulation of HGV
operators.

Label shops due to open in Bishops Stortford and Hemel Hempsted by the end of June.

and accessories for people aged 12 to pensioners and in all sizes.
“We chose Romford
for our first store as it has the right demographics for what we sell and has a
