Superfast Essex Programme Update - November 2015

Super speedy rollout on track to deliver

52,500 homes and businesses enabled

The county's fibre broadband rollout, being carried out in partnership with BT, remains on track to reach its first phase target of 65,000 homes and businesses by summer 2016.

More than 52,500 can now access the upgraded fibre network at superfast speeds - check if you can using our interactive map. In a few postcode areas work may finish ahead of schedule, providing the winter months are not too harsh, so remember to keep checking our cabinet list every Friday to find out if your cabinet has been fibre-enabled yet.

The next phase (Phase 2)

We're currently in the process of updating our interactive map to show annual timescales for the 51,000 homes and businesses being covered by our Phase 2 rollout.

Work will start straight after Phase 1 work is completed next year.

The new timescales will indicate if your postcode will be reached in:

  • July 2016 to June 2017
  • July 2017 to June 2018
  • July 2018 to June 2019

We will add six-month delivery timescales to the map once they're known next year.

Alternative technology will be satellite

Satellite has been identified as the alternative non-fibre solution which will be made available to homes and businesses not included in our fibre rollout and currently receiving speeds of less than 2Mbps.

The alternative technology was chosen by Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) and will be used nationally across all regional broadband programmes.

This second generation satellite technology (Ka) aims to provide an interim solution to ensure access to speeds of up to around 20Mbps.

The cost will be subsidised by the Superfast Essex programme to eligible homes and businesses who will be able to apply via a short online form.

Full details will be published on our website when we launch the scheme later this year.

Rural Challenge work phases confirmed

Rural Challenge Project rollout map

The rollout schedule for the Rural Challenge Project in Epping Forest District has now been revealed on the Gigaclear website.

The pure fibre operator will be bringing ultrafast broadband to addresses in 22 parishes across four work delivery phases between now and December 2016.

Events are being held in each local community before work starts. If you're covered by the RCP, look out for information being delivered to your door advising when there's an event near you and make sure you don't miss out.

Keep an eye out for more information in the local press and on the Superfast Essex website about work starting.

Proud to sponsor two key awards nights

Superfast Essex are proud sponsors of the Active Essex Sports Awards being held on 2 December. The category being sponsored by us is the ‘Services to Disability Sport’ award which celebrates individuals or an organisation that has made a significant contribution in the last year to advancing sport for people with disabilities.

Active Essex and Essex Digital Awards logos

We are also sponsoring the Essex Digital Awards 2016 ‘Online Retailer’category. This award celebrates the outstanding achievements of businesses that do all of their business online. Entries for the Essex Digital Awards closes on 19 February 2016, so there’s still plenty of time for businesses to enter.
