UK Culture Secretary visits Essex as halfway milestone in rollout is reached
The Superfast Essex programme has now enabled 32,500 homes and businesses in Essex to access superfast broadband - 50% of the total to be achieved with the Phase 1 fibre broadband rollout, by the end of summer 2016.
The achievement was marked with a visit from the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Essex MP John Whittingdale in the Maldon district.
The local progress contributes to the latest milestone in the national Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, which has now delivered superfast broadband to 2.5million homes and businesses. Read the full story.
Take a look at our new interactive map
We've launched an interactive map on our website to help you access more detailed information about when and where fibre broadband is being rolled out.
The highlights of the new interactive map are:
- Pinpoint your exact address
- Identify specific structures (cabinets) planned for upgrade in a postcode
- Six-month window when work will be carried out
- Zoom to street level
- New colours (this does not mean the Phase 1 plan has changed)
- It is updated monthly
- Date of last map update is referenced
Phase 2 contract now signed with BT
Essex County Council and BT signed a contract to deliver a second phase of the Superfast Essex programme on 27 March 2015, committing to extend superfast broadband coverage to a further 51,000 homes and businesses.
We are in the process of developing the Phase 2 rollout plan. We had hoped to publish in the next few weeks which areas we expect to be covered. However, we have identified some opportunities to further optimise the coverage to be achieved by the planned deployment which we would like to explore with BT in order to ensure we achieve the best outcome possible for Essex. Unfortunately this will delay the publication of the plan, although the overall delivery timescale will not change.

New business information on website
With many businesses already able to take advantage of faster speeds, new connectivity is having a massive impact for small and medium sized businesses in particular - helping them enjoy benefits that until now have been reserved for larger corporate enterprises.
We've just launched an improved 'For business' section on our website providing advice on how to choose the superfast broadband service that is right for your business. If you are not yet covered by the rollout, we also explain how you might benefit from alternative ways to get online.
Connection vouchers for businesses
The Government’s Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme is now active in 50 cities across the UK, offering a connection voucher of up to £3,000 for faster, better broadband for eligible businesses. Within Essex there are two schemes available, in Chelmsford and Southend. Find out more on our 'For business' page on our website.
