ILG

ILG sees phenomenal results from apprenticeships

Sussex-based International Logistics Group (ILG) has been investing in apprentices for more than two years. Working with Central Sussex College to deliver apprenticeship training schemes in warehousing and storage, ILG has seen phenomenal results since taking on their first apprentices.

Head of Organisational Development at ILG, Jane Middlemiss said, “I am pleased to be involved in a programme where we take young people and give them an opportunity to obtain a recognised qualification as well as prove themselves in terms of holding down a job in a demanding environment.”

Robert Hardman, one of the business’s young apprentices found the scheme especially beneficial commenting, “I hadn’t planned to be an apprentice when I applied for a job as a Warehouse Assistant with ILG. But when they suggested that I completed a Level 2 apprenticeship through Central Sussex College, I agreed that it would be a good idea.”

The support Robert received from ILG and Central Sussex College, allowed him to progress quickly within the company, working with several high profile clients within a year of starting the apprenticeship scheme. As a result, Robert completed his apprenticeship two months early and became responsible for one of the business’s most prestigious international contracts.

The success of apprenticeship training within ILG is just one of many for Central Sussex College who are committed to working closely with employers to ensure their business requirements are met. GM Burleys

Growing a career with LEAP!

The innovative Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Platform (LEAP) set up by Lewes District Council has created a success story with G Burley & Son based at South Heighton, near Newhaven.

G Burley & Son has now taken on three apprentices, Neale Gould, Tim Burgess and Dougie Hooper, working on a grounds maintenance contract across the area. The company’s work encompasses a full range of grounds maintenance services from grass cutting, horticultural services, and tree works that are carried out on behalf of Lewes District Council and neighbouring town councils.

“When the opportunity came along to offer apprenticeships to some of my team I was delighted, especially as these members of staff are well into their 40s and 50s.” explains Mark Tavener, Contracts Manager for Lewes. “The LEAP team, together with Chichester College, have supported us throughout the process, and it’s great to be able to provide local people with an opportunity for a new career.”

“I would never have imagined starting a new career at 39,” said Neale Gould – one of G Burley & Son’s apprentices. “I love it and I get to have the best of both worlds by doing the job I love, whilst attending College and ending up with a nationally recognised qualification.”

To get in touch and find out more about apprenticeships, contact the LEAP team on 0300 330 1450 or email at info@yourleap.co.uk

Lewes District Council is a firm supporter of apprenticeships. Through our Local Enterprise & Apprenticeship Platform (LEAP), we are partnering with the public, private and voluntary sectors to help grow the local economy through the creation of new jobs and businesses.

If you are an employer, LEAP will advise you on how to employ an Apprentice, tell you what funding and grant support is available, and how employing an apprentice can reduce recruitment costs.
