Career defining moments –
brought to you by apprenticeships
All
eyes will be on the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne this weekend as a World
Record-breaking wedding is set to take place. Sussex Downs College intermediate
hospitality apprentice Tia Jestico is about to put her skills to the test
in a career defining moment as she works the bar for the wedding.
Tia Jestico, 18, from Eastbourne, is nearing the
completion of her Intermediate Apprenticeship at the Langham Hotel through
Sussex Downs College. Less than one year on from starting her apprenticeship in
the hospitality sector, Tia is set for one of the biggest and busiest weekends
of her career to date.
Tia will be working in the bar on Saturday 13
June for a wedding that is getting enough press attention to rival that of any
Royal Wedding. Langham Hotel owner Simon Kirby will see his father, George,
103, marry his fiancée Doreen, 91, setting the Guinness World Record as the
oldest couple to marry, with a combined age of 194.
For the 60 staff at the prestigious seaside
hotel, it’s all hands on deck, for Tia included. She has a full-time rota as an
apprentice, juggling the pressures of both work and college; homework is also
set, but is something Tia identifies as manageable with her busy workload.
“I wanted a more hands on approach to learning,”
Tia explains about her apprenticeship. “I applied for the position through the
Sussex Downs College Job Shop and attended an interview, as you would for any
position available.”
Hotel Manager Simon Brown, says: “Apprentices
work well as it’s a chance to introduce young people into the industry and lets
us train and shape our future workforce.
“The skills Tia and other apprentices develop by
being in the workplace alongside their College education is so beneficial.”
The Langham Hotel has been so impressed with
Tia, they are now in the process of hiring two further apprentices for the busy
hotel restaurant through Sussex Downs College.

3aaa specialise in providing Apprenticeships
within IT, Accountancy and Digital Marketing. We hear how the Brighton branch
placed their first Digital Marketing Apprentice in the training and
employability service charity Building Heroes.
Abbie Porter was 3aaa Brighton’s first placed Digital
Marketing Apprentice, opening the door in East Sussex for future digital
marketing apprentices.
Abbie started her apprenticeship with Building Heroes, a
charity founded to train and employ service leavers and young people in
sustainable buildings refurbishment and horticulture.
Abbie has settled into her apprenticeship really well and
has had amazing feedback from her employer.
Nadine Fox, Head of Training at Building Heroes, said: “Abbie
has joined our small team at Building Heroes and fitted in straight away. With
her upbeat smiling attitude and never shying away from any task. As a start-up
charity we have faced many challenges and everything asked of Abbie she has
faced head-on and completed.
“Abbie has been helping Building Heroes represent our brand
effectively through social media sites and analytically reporting on their
activity, planning campaigns and promoting our charity through appropriate
