Message from Strategic Director People and Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Skills

Keeping Devon's Children Safe

News briefing for children's services staff

                                                                                                                      19 December 2013

Dear colleague

The Children’s Safeguarding and Improvement Board (SIB) met this week and the over-riding message from the Chair, Professor Ray Jones, was that partners must work together more effectively to ensure we truly meet the needs of vulnerable children and young adults.

Ray stressed that all agencies have a responsibility to question working practices, and are best placed to identify opportunities to develop networks and new ways of working across partnerships. Where we know the system isn’t working, we need to come together to make improvements and implement changes quickly.

He laid down the challenge to all of us to make this happen, to build on our relationships and established good practice to improve outcomes, and to ensure that the most vulnerable children don’t fall through the system.

Joining us for part of the meeting were representatives from health organisations. We had an interesting discussion around how their organisations contribute to child protection, how this is quality assured, their view of their performance and issues arising for them. We will reconvene in June to continue these discussions whilst continuing to pursue opportunities for joint working.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the work you do to meet the needs of children and young people, and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Kind regards

JennieStephens and Will Mumford
