Magenta Principles

Mike Hughes | The Magenta Principles

One day Workshop on 28 June 2016

Mike Hughes will be delivering his one day workshop at the Tiverton Hotel on Tuesday 28th June 2016.

'We talk about The Magenta PrinciplesTM –  but in reality there is just one principle; in order to make sense of the information that comes their way, children have to do something to / with it. Receiving it, retaining it and eventually regurgitating it is insufficient – in short they have to think about it! The receive, retain and regurgitate approach may get a child through an examination hoop but it will not develop a deep understanding and while all teachers want to help children pass exams some of us want much more – we want them to get it, get why they got it and, as much as anything, enjoy it'.

To read more click here    |   BOOK ONLINE

Price £150 per delegate and includes a free copy of 'The Magenta Principles' book

Consultation on School Admission Arrangements 2017-18 and the Education Transport Policy for 2016/17

Dear colleagues

The admission authorities for all schools are required by the School Admissions Code to consult on their admission arrangements.  Equally, local authorities such as Devon are required to consult on the co-ordination schemes and other policies that enable parents to apply for places. The intention is that admission arrangements meet the needs of parents and children. Consultation is an important part of the process in setting school admission arrangements.

Schools Health Education Unit Survey - Invite for Schools

In 2015, Public Health commissioned a countywide school based survey of children and young people’s health related behaviour. Originating with Exeter University, the survey questionnaire was developed by the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU) who has over 30 years' experience in this field of work.

In the spring and summer terms of 2015, a total of 1589 pupils took part in 26 primary and 4 secondary school settings in Devon. The survey results aided Public Health in better understanding children’s context and perspective and provided robust evidence to more effectively target work with pupils. The data has also been incredibly helpful to schools. The evidence collected was summarised in an individual report for each school, and the combined evidence from all schools is being used to inform the Early Help for Mental Health (EH4MH) service to support schools.

Public Health is re-running the survey in the spring 2016 term. Many schools have signed up to complete the survey again and this is your school’s chance to take advantage of this exciting opportunity! READ MORE about the survey.

HMCI's Monthly Commentary - from Sir Michael Wilshaw

The October 2015 commentary looks at the improving performance of primary schools.

The November 2015 commentary looks at the role that governance plays in an increasingly autonomous education system and has commissioned inspectors to carry out an in-depth and far-reaching survey into the effectiveness of governance in our schools. A report will be published next year.

The survey is a call for evidence to inform this piece of work from anyone who has views and experience to contribute.  Read more about Sir Michael Wilshaw here.

DfE Open consultation: Local area SEND consultation

This is a consultation on Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission’s proposals for inspecting how effectively local areas fulfil their responsibilities towards children and young people who are disabled and/or have special educational needs under section 20 of the Children Act 2004. The consultation document sets out the principles under which the 2 inspectorates propose to undertake these joint inspections.

The DfE is seeking the widest possible range of views from those who have an interest in, or expertise relating to disability and special educational needs. We particularly want to hear from disabled young people and those who have special educational needs and their parents and carers.

DAPH strongly encourages all schools to respond to the consultation.
