Ill Health Retirement

Cost of Medical Assessment: You may wish to review your policy in light of a recent Ombudsman’s decision where the Ombudsman concluded that the employer was wrong to charge the member for the cost of the medical assessment.

Ill Health Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): These have recently been updated and the revised FAQs can be found here.

Please forward to colleagues within your organisation dealing with ill-health cases and your IRMPs who will also have an interest in this document.

Factsheets and leaflets

New Leaflets and Guidance

Scheme member leaflet: Following feedback from employers, we now have a member leaflet stating the main benefits of the LGPS scheme. Employers can download the leaflet to pass onto to their employees. We also plan to include a version within the Starter Pack we send to new scheme members.

Freedom and choice: The 2014 Budget stated that reforms to workplace pensions would be made with effect from 6 April 2015. They offer greater flexibility ('freedom and choice') in the way individuals aged 55 and over can access any Defined Contribution pension savings they may have.

We have produced a member leaflet on the legislation available on our website. It would be useful to make your employees aware of this leaflet which will greatly assist in answering any questions they may have.

APP

Assumed Pensionable Pay (APP)

Some employers are not including APP in their data submissions to Peninsula Pensions resulting in wrong benefit calculations for members. Please refer to the LGE payroll guide to help with your calculations.

Absent

Absences and Additional Pensions Contributions (APCs)

There have been some recent amendments to the regulations effecting Additional Pension Contributions (APCs) which are detailed here.

The End of 'Contracting Out'

With effect from 6 April 2016 'contracting out' will be abolished. To find out what this means to employers and scheme members, please read our summary.
