Adult Social Care Peer Challenge Week 16-19 June 2015

Dear colleague,

This morning we met again with Maggie Rae and Paul Clarke from the Peer Team to receive and discuss feedback on the second day of the Peer Challenge.

They were complimentary about the programme, saying that we have set up an open process that has given them the opportunity to reach insights they hope will help us in meeting the challenges we face. They wanted to pass on to those involved that wherever they have been they have experienced a warm welcome and met people who have engaged with them positively and enthusiastically about the work they do, making their job easier and more enjoyable than is sometimes the case.

Yesterday, the Peer Team had opportunities to observe frontline services all over the county and reported being impressed by frontline staff who they found to be motivated, committed and with dignity and respect embedded into the way they support people. They saw examples of positive joint working with colleagues in the NHS and voluntary sector, and were also impressed with the Frailty Hub in Newton Abbot.

The Peer Team repeated the headline feedback of yesterday, saying nothing they had seen had changed that view. They had the opportunity to see how we are managing the implementation of the Care Act and assessed us as being on track, with the caveats that we need to increase the pace on the implementation of our prevention strategy, and fine-tune some of the changes we have made in our offer to carers. They also felt we have strong political leadership with a Lead Member who is driving improvement through his commitment and experience.

Today, members of the Peer Team have another busy day in their timetable:

  • they are accompanying the Community Enabling Team in Exeter on some home visits
  • they are observing how we work with health partners on the use of the Better Care Fund
  • they are meeting with colleagues in Public Health to understand their contribution to prevention
  • they are attending Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny to witness the contribution of Members
  • they are spending some of the afternoon in St Sidwell’s Centre in Exeter to explore how we work with voluntary sector organisations.

Organisationally, all continues to go well, so thank you if you have been involved so far. If your team is being visited today, be positive in how you present the work you do and honest in sharing where you think we need to improve. We will update you tomorrow when we receive final feedback from the Peer Team who will then provide us with a written report in July which we’ll publish on our website.

Kind regards,

Jennie
