Adult Social Care Peer Challenge Week 16-19 June 2015

Dear colleague,

This morning the Peer Team arrived at County Hall bright and early, having arrived in Exeter yesterday evening from around the country.

We began the day with senior members and officers of the Council meeting the Peer Team. We presented to them a summary of our self-assessment covering:

  • the geography and population of Devon
  • how we work across the Council and with partners
  • the purpose of the Peer Challenge
  • our strengths and challenges
  • our integrated delivery and commissioning arrangements
  • our approach to prevention and
  • our priorities and risks.

The Peer Team then outlined their first thoughts – having read our self-assessment, various supporting documents, and an independent case audit. Their thoughts included:

  • we appear to be well-organised and to know ourselves
  • the team will test out how well our priorities are understood and put into action, as they travel around the county
  • the team will focus on the outcomes we’ve agreed, whilst checking that safeguarding is at the heart of what we do
  • the team see this as much a learning experience for them as it is for us and
  • this will be an open enquiry with daily feedback to be summarised more formally in a presentation on Friday afternoon and in a written report.

The Peer Team now have a busy timetable for the next three days. Although much of today is spent at County Hall, they are meeting carers at Westbank and users of our services at the Joint Engagement Board and the Healthwatch AGM. Tomorrow and Thursday they are travelling all over the county.

If you have been involved in preparations already, thank you for your contribution so far. If your team is being visited, there is nothing to worry about. This isn’t an inspection, but a review by people who run similar services elsewhere in the country. They are as interested in learning from us as we are from them. You should present your work positively, and be ready to reflect on how we can improve what we do further in the interest of those we serve.

We know this will be a demanding and challenging time for us and I'd like to thank you all in advance for your continued professionalism and commitment during the Peer Challenge process.

We will update you every day this week on the activity of the Peer Team and the feedback we receive from them.

Kind regards

Jennie
