Thames Barrier is reminder of the need for a strong global climate change deal

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Amber Rudd demonstrated how important she sees the fight against climate change by choosing the Thames Barrier as the location for her first official visit.

The Thames Barrier is an iconic part of London’s landscape and one of our best protections but barriers like this can only do so much, which is why the Government is approaching the climate change talks in Paris at the end of the year with both ambition and pragmatism.

During the visit, Amber Rudd said: "We need to take urgent and concrete action to protect our environment – because our lives and livelihoods depend on it. That’s why I’m pushing for a strong global deal in Paris – that will give certainty for businesses and investors to put the world on a low carbon path as we grow our economies and make people around the world more prosperous."

Financial support available to help vulnerable consumers with their bills

Big Energy Saving Network

Along with keeping the lights on and getting a deal in Paris on climate change, DECC aims to help keep energy bills low for families across the UK and we’re always looking for those best placed to help us do that. 

DECC's Big Energy Saving Network helps third sector organisations and community groups provide advice to people around the country on lowering their energy costs and consumption.

Communities at the heart of onshore wind changes

Wind

In June, we announced the intention to end new public subsidies for onshore wind farms by legislating to close the Renewables Obligation across Great Britain to new onshore wind generating stations from 1 April 2016.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Amber Rudd said:

"We are driving forward our commitment to end new onshore wind subsidies and give local communities the final say over any new windfarms. Onshore wind is an important part of our energy mix and we now have enough subsidised projects in the pipeline to meet our renewable energy commitments”.
