Telephone cold calls claiming to be Thomas Brewster Solicitors

Colleagues have alerted us to a disturbing scam that one of their residents reported to them involving a telephone cold call from a lady who asked for the resident by first name and then stated her address. After that the recident was transferred to a male who stated he was working for ‘Thomas Brewster Solicitors’ and went on to say that the resident had taken out a contract a year ago with a company called ‘Unwanted Calls Ltd’ but had not paid the £99.99 required.

He then said that the resident would be taken to court in London ‘next week’ for fraud but it could be settled by paying £50 over the phone. He then said that if it went to court she may have to pay ‘up to £6,000’.

The resident refused to pay and ended the call.

The call appears to be an attempted scam; there is no ‘Thomas Brewsters Solicitors’ registered with the Law Society meaning there is no genuine solicitors business of that name and the business mentioned in the call, ‘Unwanted Calls Ltd’ was dissolved in 2010 meaning there is no genuine company of that name trading.

If you receive a cold call using this approach end the call and then report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via their online reporting site.

Suspicious Amazon and PayPal emails

We have issued previous alerts on this but we continue to receive regular reports from residents who have received suspicious emails claiming to be from Amazon and PayPal.

The Amazon email mentions a ‘recent order’ whilst the PayPal one talks about having to reset or update your account.

These emails are not from Amazon or PayPal.

Our advice – Do not respond to emails that ask you to provide personal or financial information, open any attachments contained in the email or navigate to any website in the email.

If you want to verify an order or check your account details use the actual home pages for the organisations concerned and log onto your account that way.

If you have opened an attachment or visited a website using a link contained in a suspicious email it is strongly recommended that you run an anti-virus or anti malware program to check your computer.
