In Partnership...a round up of all things SEND in Coventry

=============

From the manager's office

Welcome to February's edition of In Partnership. We hope that you are finding the slightly new style agreeable?!

The biggest news in the last month, has been the Government's announcement that there will be a further £80m funding for supporting the SEND reforms in 2016/17 - unfortunately not all for Coventry! This is great news, particularly when set against the cuts that have been seen in Local Government spending as a whole.

Find out more about it below, but its biggest impact for us here at SEND IASS will be the continuation of the "Independent Supporters" programme, which alongside Grapevine, supports children, young people and their families through the Education, Health and Care plan process. If you are due to go through this process, find out more about how Independent Support can help you.

We'd love to hear your feedback on this EBulletin or if you have any suggestions for content. Get in touch by emailing us at  iass@coventry.gov.uk.

Health information

The five year forward view for Mental Health

“Mental health problems represent the largest single cause of disability in the UK. The cost to the economy is estimated at £105 billion a year – roughly the cost of the entire NHS. This independent report of the Mental Health Taskforce on behalf of NHS England, looks at the extent of the problem, highlighting the fact that over 50% of all mental health problems are established by the age of 14 (rising to 75% by the age of 24) and puts forward recommendations for the next 5 years.”

6 ways to help your child or teen with anxiety

Anxiety is a natural and essential part of daily human existence. We all live with worries and stress from time to time, but when anxiety begins to interfere with a young person’s life – when they can no longer face school, or have problems interacting with friends, or performing simple tasks – what can we as parents and caregivers do to help them face seemingly insurmountable fears?

The science of overcoming anxiety is using the well-researched approach called gradual exposure therapy which involves helping individuals gradually face their fears. The art of therapy is figuring out how to actually convince someone to face their fears.
