The English Indices of Deprivation 2015 were published on 30 September. It is an update to the Indices of Deprivation 2010 and is the key measure of the deprivation levels experienced by residents of all local neighbourhoods in England. The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) combines all domains of deprivation; employment, income, health, education, crime, access to services and the living environment, to measure the level of multiple deprivation experienced by residents of neighbourhoods, of which they are 195 across Coventry. Overall Coventry has improved
marginally between the IMD 2010 and the IMD 2015 relative to other local
authority areas.
The indices are used widely to analyse
patterns of deprivation and identify areas that would benefit from special
initiatives amongst many other uses. They should not be used to stigmatise particular neighbourhoods; the indices can only measure certain elements of life in an area and being measured as highly deprived in the IMD does not necessarily mean it is a 'bad' area or anything negative about the residents.
