New HOV/HOT Lane Hours Aim to Improve Traffic Flow and Ease Growing Congestion

METRO is adding time for "HOV-2+ Only" lanes beginning August 3, 2015 in order to ease congestion and improve traffic flow through three major Houston area corridors. Affected corridors include I-45 North Freeway, US-59 Southwest Freeway, and US-290 Northwest Freeway.

During the peak afternoon commute drivers will see the window for "HOV 2+ Only" vehicles extended by 30 minutes as follows:

New HOV 2+ Only Hours Beginning August 3

New hours are needed to address congestion and increase speeds for commuters. Managed lanes are meant to primarily benefit high occupancy vehicles such as buses, vanpools and carpools, particularly during peak periods. HOV lanes serve as a strong incentive for ridesharing, which in turn can help to manage congestion.

Drivers of single occupant vehicles who use METRO's HOT lanes will not see a hike in toll prices, only increased closure times.
