This month marks a historic day in our nation's history. On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. The monumental measure prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity in employment, government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation for individuals with disabilities.
"Clearly, this piece of
legislation has done more to provide the opportunity of freedom of movement for people that live across this country." said METRO President and CEO Tom Lambert. Lambert also acknowledged that prior to the enactment of the ADA, METRO had already begun taking the initiative to improve accessibility on its buses.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of America’s most
comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation, METRO is hosting a breakfast featuring notable guest speakers. The free community event is open to METROLift customers, their caregivers, and advocates for people with disabilities. The celebration will take
place Saturday, July 25, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Power Center
located at 12401 S. Post Oak Rd, Houston, TX 77045. To RSVP please email Hilda Montemayor at HG01@ridemetro.org.
Americans have more and better transportation options because of the passage of the ADA. In the 25 years since, the public transportation industry has improved the accessibility to transit services not only for persons with disabilities, but for all Americans.
Please come and celebrate the 25th anniversary of
the ADA with METRO which, through METROLift,
offers reliable and affordable paratransit services.
