The thieves gained access to the stretchers by breaking the back glass out of parked ambulances and ONLY the stretcher was stolen. Transcare reports that through their video surveillance they identified a silver dodge magnum, a black jeep Cherokee and an older style wheelchair van were used in the theft.
There was a company name on the side of the WC van however, it was not readable due to poor lighting. A black jeep Cherokee scoped out their parking lot about 9:30pm. It was seen again about 11:30pm. The WC van arrived about 1:30am and the glass was smashed and 6 stretchers stolen. The WC van left the parking lot at 1:42am.
This is not just happening in Houston. We are aware of at least 7 other stretchers thefts since Thanksgiving in the following areas:
Temple – one
Round Rock – one
Georgetown – one
Bexar County – three
Austin - one
