Construction tops out on Turtle Creek tower

Construction continues at the site of JLB Partners' 18-story high-rise being built at Cedar Springs Road and the Katy Trail near Turtle Creek in Uptown. Designed by GDA Architects, the new luxury residential tower will include approximately 300 apartments, and is scheduled to open in 2015. Source: Dallas Morning News, December 22, 2014.

General News

How lifting the Wright Amendment changed the game at Dallas Love Field in 2014

The federal regulations that restricted flights from Dallas Love Field for nearly 35 years were lifted in 2014. As a result, airlines operating at Love Field began offering nonstop flights from Dallas to cities throughout the contiguous United States. In addition to the nonstop flights offered by Southwest Airlines to 15 new destinations, San-Francisco-based Virgin America relocated to Love Field and began offering nonstop service to four cities.  Source: Dallas Business Journal, December 24, 2014.

Business group sees rapid growth, aims for sustainability

The Lake Highlands Chamber of Commerce has seen rapid growth since its founding in August of 2013. With approximately 100 members, the chamber provides exposure and networking for area businesses and aims to help create a stronger business market for the Lake Highlands area. The tide is turning for a forgotten Oak Cliff neighborhood

Known for over a century as the Dallas Land & Loan, the historic neighborhood in Oak Cliff is being rebranded as the Bishop Arts Neighborhood Association. Neighbors have started a crime watch, and are working together to help older residents with yard work in an effort to promote beautification. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 3, 2015.

CitySquare center moves to South Dallas, spreading opportunities - and hope

The new 52,000 SF CitySquare Opportunity Center on Malcolm X Boulevard is designed to not only provide services to the surrounding community, but also to convey the message that South Dallas can grow. Wal-Mart becomes a magnet for other stores in South Oak Cliff

The new Wal-Mart Supercenter at Glen Oaks Crossing in South Oak Cliff is attracting development to an area once underserved by retailers. Approximately 70,000 SF of new retail space valued at $10 million is currently being developed by Dallas-based Corinth Properties, and will include a DollarTree, Gamestop, Wingstop, IHOP, and many others. New warehouse project coming on I-30 west of downtown Dallas

Developer Holt Lunsford has broken ground on the Turnpike West development on Interstate 30 at Chalk Hill Road in west Dallas. The development will include more than 250,000 SF of warehouse space and is located just north of the Pinnacle business park. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 7, 2015.

High-rise project next to Klyde Warren Park to be largest in central Dallas

Developer Trammell Crow Co. is planning to build a 900,000 SF retail and residential development at Pearl Street and Woodall Rodgers Freeway on the north side of Klyde Warren Park. The development will include a 32-story residential building and 19-story office tower, with 22,000 SF of retail space on the lower floors. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 7, 2014.

Developer outlines $240M redevelopment plans for downtown Dallas skyscraper

New York-based Olympic Property Partners LLC and Dallas-based BDRC are planning a $240 million redevelopment of 1401 Elm Street downtown. The project will include approximately 485 luxury apartment homes, 135,000 SF of retail, and is expected to be completed by December 2016. Source: Dallas Morning News, December 31, 2014.

Dallas' Uptown area reaching out to add more families to the mix

Non-profit group Uptown Dallas Inc. is launching initiatives to make Dallas' Uptown neighborhood more family friendly. Plans include designing a playground for Griggs Park, and starting an early childhood PTA. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 10, 2015.

City Unemployment Rate falls

  • The preliminary unemployment rate for the City of Dallas for December 2014 decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 4.4 percent.
  • The rate’s change was the result of a decrease in the net number of unemployed with only a slight decrease in the city’s labor force.
  • A preliminary unemployment rate of 4.4 percent is the lowest percentage of unemployment in the City of Dallas since April 2008.
