EPA recognizes Dallas for being among nation’s leading green power users

Dallas – The City of Dallas is ranked number 19 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Top 100 list of the largest green power users. The City uses more than 359 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, enough to meet 50 percent of the organization's electricity use. Dallas also ranked number four on the Top 30 Local Government list.

"This is a huge honor, and we are proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” Mayor Mike Rawlings said.  “Using green power helps our city become more sustainable, while also sending a message that supporting clean sources of energy is a sound business decision and an important choice in reducing climate risk.”

Green power is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydro. The City of Dallas purchases a utility green power product from Invenergy. Using green power helps accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA notes that the City’s use of green power is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2)emissions of more than 52,000 passenger vehicles per year, or CO2 from electricity used by more than 34,000 average American homes annually.

The EPA Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to use green power to reduce environmental impacts associated with electricity use. The Partnership currently has more than 1,300 Partner organizations voluntarily using billions of kilowatt-hours of green power annually. Partners include Fortune 500® companies; small and medium sized businesses; local, state, and federal governments; and colleges and universities.
