Apartment project kicking off north of American Airlines Center in Victory Park

The surface parking lot north of the American Airlines Center arena has been closed and fenced in anticipation of a coming multifamily development. The 6-acre tract lies between Houston St and Victory Ave. Camden Property Trust will be constructing a 433-unit apartment community, one of five similar complexes being built in the vicinity.Source: Dallas Morning News, December 27, 2013.

Grant Thornton extends lease at Comerica Bank Tower in downtown Dallas

Global tax accounting firm Grant Thornton re-signed their lease in downtown Dallas at the Comerica Bank Tower, 1717 Main St. Their 60,000 sq ft office will be a bit smaller than their previous lease, but will be designed to incorporate more collaborative work spaces with modernized conference rooms, state-of-the-art video conferencing capabilities, and more natural light. Flora Lofts bringing affordable apartments to the Arts District

Construction will begin in May on the affordable artists lofts in the Dallas Arts District. The 24.5 million Flora Lofts will be constructed at 2121 Flora St by a partnership between LaReunion TX and developer Graham Greene, who owns the lot. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 6, 2014.

Law Firm Moves to Downtown

The Dallas office of Perkins Coie has been growing over the past year. The Seattle-based law firm decided to expand its offices to Ross Tower at 2001 Ross Ave in downtown. Their 36,175 sq ft lease is poised to accommodate additional anticipated growth. Source: Dallas Business Journal, January 9, 2014.

No small potatoes: Romano plans spud restaurant, $2B residential project at Trinity Groves in West Dallas

Restaurateur Phil Romano has announced he will open a new restaurant concept called Potato Flats within his restaurant incubator, Trinity Groves, in West Dallas. Construction will start in just a few weeks with an opening in less than three months. He is also working on building a $2 billion residential project on land surrounding the incubator. Source: Dallas Business Journal, January 10, 2014.

More apartments and retail planned for Lamar Street in the Cedars

Developer Jack Matthews plans to build another mixed-use residential complex in the Cedars neighborhood just south of downtown. The $28.7 million development will include 280 apartments, retail and a parking garage on the vacant lot at 1210 S. Lamar St. Source: Dallas Morning News, January 6, 2014.

New Walmart Supercenter opens in South Oak Cliff

Walmart opened a new supercenter in southern Dallas at 200 Short Boulevard on January 15. The store is 185,000 square feet and will create 300 new jobs. Source: Dallas Business Journal, January 14, 2014.

Developers get ready to start luxury Uptown tower

Work is scheduled to begin on a new residential tower at 1900 Cedar Springs Rd at the corner of Harwood St in Uptown. The $32.5 million development is a nine-story luxury high-rise that will include 180 units, an outdoor pool with cabanas, business center, exercise and wellness facility, leasing center, and a ground-floor high-profile restaurant. Source: Dallas Business Journal, January 23, 2014.

Wingstop moves headquarters to Dallas

Wingstop Restaurants is relocating its headquarters to Dallas from a nearby city. The new headquarters location is at 5501 Interstate 635. The company just finished its biggest year of growth, marking its 600th location and 10th year of same-store sales growth. Source: Dallas Business Journal, December 31, 2013.

Neighborhood southwest of Oak Lawn becomes hub for art lovers

The Design District is becoming a destination for fine art galleries in addition a hub for decorators and designers. Some newer galleries that may be found in the district include Craighead Green Gallery, Conduit Gallery, Holly Johnson Gallery, SMINK Modern Furniture and Fine Art Gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art and Cohn Drennan Contemporary. Unemployment
  • The City’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points to 5.9 percent. 
  • While the rate did decrease, over 1,000 Dallas residents left the labor force.
