Jacobs Engineering Moves to Downtown Dallas

Jacobs Engineering has completed its move to the Harwood Building in downtown Dallas. Around 350 employees will be relocated there over the next two years, consolidating their regional offices from three offices in the metroplex. Source: Dallas Morning News, July 31, 2013.

Gen-X Store Comes to Wynnewood Village

The second Gen-X store in DFW has signed a lease for 14,650 sq ft at Wynnewood Village. The store sells men’s, women’s and children’s clothing “catering to high density African-American & Hispanic neighborhoods.” Source: Oak Cliff People, July 10, 2013.

Hope Rises for Southwest Center Mall Revitalization

The 38 year old mall is South Oak Cliff is undergoing a revitalization. Now at 80 percent occupancy, city leaders, residents and business leaders are optimistic for continuing the transformation. In 2009 the mall occupancy was at 50 percent. New owner CityView replaced the utility system and other fundamentals, attracted new tenants, and kept anchors Macy’s, Sears, and Burlington Coat Factory, while demolishing the JC Penney site. Trammell Crow Residential Begins Construction on Oak Cliff Apartments

Garland-Peavy Becoming a Retail Destination

The Garland-Peavy intersection in Lakewood is seeing the revitalization of an old retail strip. New entrepreneurial investment is changing the landscape and attracting other entrepreneurs. Texas the Hardest Working State in the U.S.

Of the hardest working cities in the U.S., five of the top ten are in Texas. Dallas ranks number 7. The U.S.’s 50 largest cities were included in the comparison. Dallas ranked 17th in Unemployment, 2nd in Hours Worked, 19th in Commute Length, 18th in Volunteer Time, 6th in Number of Hours Slept, 21st in Number of Workers Per Household, 36th in Cost of Living. Texas High-Tech Job Market Ranks 2nd in U.S.

The Texas high-tech industry created a net 10,000 new jobs from 2011 to 2012. According to the TechAmerica Foundation, Texas has over 485,000 technology jobs, with a high concentration in the Dallas/Fort Worth region. Source: CBS Local,  July 18, 2013.

The New Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden at the Arboretum

The Arboretum’s $62 million expansion includes the 8-acre Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden opening September 21. More than 150 interactive exhibits and 17 Learning Rooms with unique themes teach and demonstrate science concepts. Source: DMagazine FrontBurner, June 26, 2013.

New Top O’ Texas Tower at Fair Park

  • The City’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 6.9 percent.
  • The number of unemployed fell despite a seasonal shedding of public school and college employment.
