General News

How the new U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Dallas will impact North Texas innovation


On November 9th a new U.S. Patent and Trademark Office opened in downtown Dallas at the Terminal Annex Federal Building, located at 207 Houston Street. Offerings include a public search facility, training room, library, as well as communication hubs for phone calls and video conferences with patent examiners at its main Alexandra, VA office. Match relocates headquarters to NorthPark area

Match, the world's largest dating service, is moving its headquarters from its current Preston Center location to NorthPark Center, located next to The Shops at Park Lane. NorthPark Center recently completed an extensive capital improvement program. Upgrades were made to the building's lobby, tenant lounge, fitness center, and conference center. Approximately 350 Match employees will move to the new location in August 2016. Source: D Magazine, November 9, 2015.

Developer Craig Hall unveils latest news about his Hall Arts complex in the Dallas Arts District

At a recent event developer Craig Hall spoke about the next phase of his Hall Arts complex, which includes a luxury condo high-rise and boutique hotel. Hall said that if all goes as planned, he could break ground by next year on the project, located in the Dallas Arts District, adjacent to KPMG Plaza. The City of Dallas gets $30M boost to develop four new city center parks

The City of Dallas has received $30M to develop four downtown parks - Pacific Plaza, Carpenter Plaza, West End Plaza, and Harwood Park. The funding was provided by the organization Parks for Downtown Dallas, formerly known as The Belo Foundation. Dallas has successfully spent the last few years focused on developing green space in the city center, with Klyde Warren Park, Main Street Garden Park and Belo Garden Park as examples of that success. The Statler Hilton to reopen in 2016

Dallas' historic Statler Hilton Hotel is being restored to its former glory as one of, if not the most, important buildings in Dallas. The Statler's managing partner Frank Zaccanelli says his top priority is to maintain the hotel's historical importance while also creating a place where you can live, work, and have fun. The Statler's ballroom has famously hosted Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Tina Turner. In addition to the hotel renovation, plans include private residences, a 24-hour diner and retail. Work starts on Deep Ellum apartment tower

Developer StreetLights Residential has broken ground on its latest high-rise project The Case Building, located at Main and Hall Streets just south of Baylor Medical Center. Plans for the 17-story tower include a fitness center, private dining room, swimming pool, conference center, and a bike storage area with repair area. This is one of two projects StreetLights is working on in Deep Ellum - the other being the Epic mixed-use project at Elm Street and Good-Latimer Expressway. Construction set to start soon on Cityplace apartment and hotel tower

By year-end developer Forest City Enterprises expects to start work on its latest project, a luxury high-rise and hotel on Blackburn Street just west of North Central Expressway. Plans for the project include 25,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Cityplace Development is a partner in the project with architects Good Fulton & Farrell on board as project designers. The Office of Economic Development's B.R.A.I.N. team interviewed on Startup Dallas

Daniel Oney and Richard Carrizales of The Dallas B.R.A.I.N. (Business Resource And Information Network) were recently interviewed by Startup Dallas' Jason Croft about the services The Dallas B.R.A.I.N. is providing to local entrepreneurs and small businesses. The Dallas B.R.A.I.N. was recently launched as a partnership between Dallas' Office of Economic Development and the Dallas Public Library. White Rock Soap Gallery parlays farmers market booth into retail shop

Due to demand for its handcrafted natural soaps, candles and body care products, White Rock Soap Gallery has opened its first retail shop in Dallas' Northlake Shopping Center, sharing space with Gecko Hardware. In addition to their own products they also showcase those from other local makers such as Sissy's Soaps, Deep Soaps, and Koke Gardens. "We wanted to be a gallery of local artisans, all-natural body care and soaps, and good stuff for people" says White Rock's Keith Bailey. Source: Lake Highlands Advocate, November 12, 2015.

Serenity Place Apartments open in Southern Dallas

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Serenity Place Apartments, located at 3124 Denley Drive in Southern Dallas. Created to provide permanent housing for homeless women with or without children, Serenity Place has 45 two- and three- bedroom apartments and a children's playground. The project is part of the City of Dallas' ongoing efforts to revitalize Southern Dallas and was made possible by a public-private partnership. Still in development is the second phase of the project, a mixed-use commercial segment. Source: D Economy Blog, November 25, 2015.

Trammell Crow Co. plans big warehouse project west of downtown Dallas

Developer Trammell Crow plans to start construction early next year on a 475,000 square foot warehouse project on Chalk Hill Road near I-30 in west Dallas. The 35.6-acre property is near the Pinnacle Park industrial park where Crow has built several other warehouses. Source: Dallas Morning News, November 2, 2015.

  • The Council for Community and Economic Research publishes quarterly Cost of Living Index to provide an accurate measure to compare cost of living differences among urban areas. Items on which the index is based have been chosen to reflect different categories of consumer expenditures.

  • Since 2014, the City of Dallas has had the lowest cost of living index score of major cities within the ten largest metropolitan areas in the United States.
