Fiscal Notes, the Texas Comptroller’s flagship economic newsletter, has provided Texans with timely and useful information on Texas government and the state economy for nearly 40 years — and now it’s back.

The May 2015 Fiscal Notes marks a return to the issue-length format and a new focus on in-depth analysis of state revenues and issues affecting the state economy. In keeping with the “back-to-basics” focus of Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s administration, the all-new Fiscal Notes leads with a detailed analysis of the history of the franchise tax, a key Texas tax on business — and frequently a controversial one, which has weathered many court challenges and legislative reforms.

Fiscal Notes will appear monthly beginning with the May issue. Topics slated for the near future include the taxation of Internet sales and a look at major achievements of the 2015 Texas Legislature, as well as their expected effect on state revenues.
