$8 Billion for Education

Hello Friends,

This week on the Senate Floor I brought attention to the serious lack of prioritization of education funding by the majority party. When Republicans controlled at least one chamber of the Legislature over a decade ago, education was funded at 44.7% of the discretionary budget. The majorities since have consistently eroded education funding to dangerously low levels today. The Co-Chairs latest budget is no better. Lowering the percentage of education funding to one of the lowest levels in nearly 20 years.

My Republican colleagues and I are encouraging Democrats to join us in supporting $8 billion for education. I hope my Democrat colleagues will take this into consideration and work with us to solve this problem. While I recognize that funding alone will not solve Oregon's education problems, I will continue to work for more choices and opportunities for students, parents, and teachers to peruse their passion in education.

Below you will see an infographic showing the decline of education spending under the Democratic controlled Legislature contrasted with the Republican plan for the upcoming budget.
