Friends and Neighbors,

Oregon is one of the few states where the student achievement gap is actually widening instead of closing, and where overall achievement of students has remained stagnate for the better part of the past decade.

I hope you will join me next week as I continue my summer forum series, with a focus on education and closing the achievement gap. I plan on having a discussion on the best practices and policy initiatives from around the state and nation that can increase student achievement.

Education Forum: Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, August 21st
Medford School District Education Center (Board Room)
815 South Oakdale, Medford

Guest Panelists include:

Tom Cole: CEO of Kids Unlimited
Dee Anne Everson: Director of United Way and sponsor of the Big Idea
Toya Fick: Director of Stand for Children, Oregon
Teresa Sayre: Superintendent of Phoenix-Talent School District
Dr. Brian Shumate: Superintendent of Medford School District
Marlene Yesquen: Member of the Medford School Board and the Early Learning Council

These conversations are vital in helping me garner community input on issues and ideas that help shape my legislative agenda.

In health,

Alan C. Bates
