Kids need booster seats until they're eight years old or 4'9"
tall. Booster seats work by raising the child up so adult safety belts fit
snugly and correctly - flat across the collarbone and low over the hips, not
across the neck or riding up over the stomach. Children who ride in poorly
fitting safety belts can slide out of the belt system and be seriously hurt in
a crash. So play it safe. Keep your kids in booster seats until they're eight
years old or 4'9". During Child Passenger Safety Week and the rest of the
year, make sure your child is in the right seat to keep them safe.
You weren't wearing your seat belt. So what? You're a safe driver.
You'll be ok…right? Wrong! It's time to face the facts: In 2013, there were
9,580 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United
States. Why did you just get that ticket? Because the time to buckle up is
before you've been ejected from your vehicle. In real life you don’t get a
second chance. That's why ODOT is supporting a statewide "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign through September 7.
Bright and sunny days mean good riding weather for both drivers and people on bikes. ODOT would like to remind drivers to give bicycles extra room when passing (ORS 811.065). Check out the new television public service announcement (0:30) and flyer that provide helpful driver safety tips.
