BCD in Focus is a new electronic publication that illustrates how the division is addressing construction trends and industry challenges, and highlights news and training opportunities. The newsletter will generally be published quarterly. Thanks for reading! We welcome your feedback.
Here's an interesting fact: In one year, building inspectors in Oregon traveled 4 million miles to complete 663,000 inspections. That's a lot of road miles.
The division has taken an active approach in the past few years to collect and monitor construction data as reported by cities and counties across the state. The information provides insight into the location and type of construction in progress, as well as impacts to building-related services, employment, and fee revenue. Ultimately, the information helps the division identify building trends and plan more successfully to serve construction trade workers, contractors, and local governments.
Data collected in 2015 tells a story of economic revival. Oregon's building industry continues to rebound after bottoming out in 2010-2011, although the industry has not reached the boom of prerecession levels in 2007-2008.

The State of Oregon is working closely with a group of architects and developers who are planning medium- and high-rise buildings that will incorporate cross-laminated timber (CLT) components as an alternative or complimentary addition to traditional construction.
CLT is an emerging wood product, usually in the form of multi-layered laminated beams or panels, that can be used in both residential and commercial buildings. The first use of CLT in the state was the Oregon Zoo's Elephant Plaza Building, which used cross-laminated wood panels on its roof (see photo).
