2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar Deadline

DEADLINE FOR PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR RECOMMENDATIONS IS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2022. Note: Recommendations do not guarantee nomination. More than one student from each school can be submitted for recommendation; however, only ONE recommendation per student will be accepted. Notify your principal of the recommendation to avoid duplications. Make sure your district is represented in the pool of prospective nominations! For questions about this process, email jenna.jones@sde.ok.gov.

ACT Fee Waivers

Across the country, more than one in five registrations for the national ACT test (taken by students on a Saturday) are completed using a fee waiver. ACT's fee waiver program is a key part of ACT’s nonprofit mission to help everyone find success in education and the workforce.

ACT's Fee Waiver program provides:

100% coverage of ACT test fees
FREE access to learning resources
FREE additional score reports
Eligibility to have college application fees waiver

HOPE Squad Grant Application

Suicide is the leading cause of death between youth ages 10-19 year old. Hope Squad's mission is to reduce youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention. The Oklahoma State Department Student Support team is grateful to announce an opportunity to apply for a grant through the INTEGRIS Health Community Giving Fund to develop your own Hope Squad program in your school.

What is HOPE SQUAD?
Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. Hope Squad members are nominated by their classmates as trustworthy peers and trained by advisors. The program reduces youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention. Nationally known for their ability to connect students with each other and to mental health resources, Hope Squad has a process that works on all levels for youth suicide prevention. Join the movement and empower students to seek help and save lives.

Crisis Team is Ready to Help

If your school or district experiences a crisis, the OSDE Crisis Team is ready to help. We offer as little or as much support as needed. We respond to everything from an individual student in crisis to a large-scale disaster.

We can offer consultation and technical assistance, digital resources, or even in-person support. This service is FREE to all Oklahoma districts and schools.

Professional Development Opportunities & Deadlines

OSDE Connect Platform

This asynchronous training platform includes webinars, discussions, and technical assistance as you work towards implementing the Oklahoma Comprehensive School Counseling Framework. This platform is for new school counselors and those with established school counseling programs. It was created to help you wherever you are on your journey towards comprehensive school counseling!

The platform includes self-paced modules. You can earn 20 professional development hours through the modules. While the modules are asynchronous, synchronous support will be provided along the way.
Note: This is the same course that was published last year, but it is now in Canvas. If you started this course on the previous platform, you will need to create a new account, however, you are able to begin where you left off.

"Using the Use-of-Time Calculator" Webinar

October 25th | 9:00-10:00 am

Come learn how to use the Use-of-Time Calculator to provide a snapshot of how you are spending your time. The Use-of-Time Calculator also helps school counselors document how much time is currently being spent on school counseling activities versus non-school counseling activities to aid in advocating for the appropriate role of the school counselor. It is recommended that all school counselors use the Use-of-Time Calculator in the Fall and in the Spring. This webinar will prepare you to use the tool right away to help you work towards implementing a comprehensive school counseling program!

"Delivering Student Services in Schools" Webinar Series

Come learn how to effectively and efficiently provide student services in elementary and/or secondary schools. This series will discuss best practices for direct student services including instruction, counseling, and appraisal and advisement with classrooms, small groups, and individual students. The series will also discuss how to use indirect student services including collaboration, consultation, and referrals to best serve your students and school.

NEW: Free Crisis Team Training

We are now offering a 2-3 hour Crisis Team Training that shows teams how to use their PREPaRE training combined with OSDE resources to respond in crisis situations.

In this training, teams will:

Review core elements of PREPaRE Workshops 1 and 2
Look in-depth at the Incident Command System (ICS)
Evaluate a Crisis Checklist organized both by ICS job and order of operations
Use tools created by the OSDE to make Crisis Response more efficient and effective
Participate in role plays and table top exercises
Review crisis scripts
Discuss best practices on:
- Announcing a crisis
- Caring for students and staff
- Memorials, funerals, and out of school events
- Preparation and recovery

OSDE Crisis Toolkit Training

The OSDE Crisis Toolkit is getting an update! Several important documents have been added to aid schools in their crisis response. The Toolkit has also been divided into crisis sections to make it easier to find what you need.

FREE PREPaRE CRISIS WORKSHOPS

We are now scheduling PREPaRE Workshops 1 and 2 for the Spring semester. The PREPaRE Curriculum is developed by the National Association of School Psychologists, PREPaRE is a comprehensive, evidence-based, and resource-rich curriculum for school crisis prevention and response. This training is ideal for schools committed to improving their school safety and crisis management plans, empowering crisis teams, and providing appropriate emergency response with an emphasis on balancing physical and psychological safety for students and staff.

PREPaRE Workshop 1 Crisis Prevention and Preparedness: Comprehensive School Safety Planning is an one-day workshop provides school mental health professionals, administrators, security officers, and other educators knowledge and resources important to establishing and sustaining comprehensive, ongoing school safety and crisis prevention, mitigation, and preparedness. Making use of existing personnel, resources, and programs, PREPaRE can be adapted to a school’s needs and size. Specific attention is given to developing, exercising, and evaluating safety/crisis teams and plans, and integrating school and community crisis response personnel.

Also addressed are issues associated with the media, social media, technology, students with special needs, culture, and memorials. Training reinforces improved school climate, student behavior and academic functioning, student resilience, and school staff crisis response capabilities.

PREPaRE Workshop 2 Crisis Intervention and Recovery: The Roles of School-Based Mental Health Professionals is a two-day workshop provides school-based mental health professionals and other school crisis intervention team members with the knowledge necessary to meet the mental health needs of students and staff following school-associated crisis events. This workshop teaches participants how to prevent and prepare for psychological trauma, help to reaffirm both the physical health of members of the school community and students’ perceptions that they are safe and secure, evaluate conduct psychological triage, respond to the psychological needs of the school community utilizing a multi-tiered approach, and examine the effectiveness of school crisis intervention and recovery efforts. This workshop is an excellent course for all professionals in your district who provide mental health crisis intervention services.
